Does your child sleepwalk ?

DS1 (6.5) sleepwalks about once a week, and has done, off and on, for as long as I can remember.

At first we thought he was actually waking up, because his eyes are open and he actually talks and makes sense (although a bit random in terms of subject matter!) but over time we realised he IS actually asleep -he never replies to anything said, and doesn't remember in the morning.

It seems incredible because he sleeps in a top bunk, yet manages to climb down, come downstairs, or in our room whatever.

The things he says are sometimes quite bizarre and amusing, e.g. earlier this week he arrived by the side of my bed saying, "I've been thinking about the numbers and it's 49, not 52..."

I swear he was fast asleep.

It freaks out our babysitters a bit, as he does have a bit of a glassy-eyed expression when it happens...

It's usually within the first 5 hours of going to bed, and he isn't usually upset or alarmed about anything, so we're not particularly worried, but I just wondered if anyone knew what makes some children sleepwalk?

dd (4.5) sort of sleep talks/walks but we can tell because it's usually stuff relating to nursery/being told off, i.e. her saying 'I don't want to' 'don't push me'

I'm guessing it's just their way of processing what has been happing during a very active day. As long as there is no way he can harm himself I wouldn't worry :)

dont know, but i did that until i got permanently knackered after ds3 arrived. now i just talk. answered the phone once and was chatting for about 10 minutes before i woke up and didnt know what was going on. friend on the other end said i sounded a bit spacey but didnt realise i was asleep! dp is constantly getting into trouble for waking me up by talking to me, but always moans that i sit up and start the conversation so its not his fault.

could be worse, his ex once woke up in the middle of the street, completely naked apart from a pair of socks. had to walk round the block to his house (no keys to get back in of course) and met a man walking a dog who just smiled, said hello and kept on going

its probably a sign of vast intelligence or something like that :)
