What can your 18 month old do?

Just out of interest, wondering what most 18 month olds can 'do'? E.g words, counting, colours, potty

My DD is 20mo now - at 18mo she had lots and lots of words but was nowhere near potty training (she still isn't). She could count to 5 but couldn't (and still can't really) recognise colours - she can say the words for a couple of colours but has no clue what colour they correspond to. The other thing she can't do yet is sleep through the night!

Figgygal · 23/07/2013 21:46

DS is 19mo tomorrow he only has a few words e.g bubble, ball, mummy, daddy, shoes but he knows all his animal noises, car noise, train etc and understands most instructions.

He runs he climbs he jumps he walks backwards uses cutlery eats everything in sight.

Unfortunately he also stands in his potty indicating he is understandably months off considering nappy free living and is throwing horrid tantrums.

He's a joy Grin

adewonder · 29/07/2013 22:38

Ds is 19 m, can say his 10 or so words, jogs around the house, stamps and climbs on chairs. He's fine at walking, but is going through a stage of not wanting to walk when we're out of the house. He throws a ball but doesn't catch. Crayons and chalks, 'reads' books, runs his cars all over the house, points at cars and planes and dogs. He also throws things, pulls my hair and tries to hook his fingers in my eyes/nose, all of which he knows is naughty. Deliberate naughtiness is something he's getting skilled at.
I didn't know they could count so young! He will hold his finger up at me saying 1, as I say I'll be 1 minute when I go into another room, to stop him being upset.

ceeveebee · 29/07/2013 22:51

DTs are 20 mo. DTD repeats most words I say to her, and probably can say about 100 words but no sentences yet. She understands all instructions, recognises a few colours, can count to 5, can take off and put on socks, shoes, hat and some trousers. Runs, climbs, marches, bounces. Eats anything and everything with cutlery, drinks from open cup. Loves ride on toys, never sits down long enough to do anything like a puzzle.

DTS hasn't really said any words yet, not even mummy or daddy, has only just started waving, but sings along to lots of songs and can string 3-4 words together in a song. Can count to 10, walked late, not a climber. Uses mainly fingers to eat, a bit fussy with food, still needs a spout cup. Loves turning pages in books, plastic food, bead gardens, shape sorters etc

ceeveebee · 29/07/2013 22:52

When I say "can count to 5/10" I mean can recite the words, don't think they know that eg the word "three" = 3 things yet

BJR · 30/07/2013 19:35

DS is 19 months and probably has about 50 words and understands most instructions. Will sit on potty if asked but nowhere near ready for potty training. He can say most numbers to ten but no idea about colours.

Can feed himself fine with fork and spoon but generally uses hands as its quicker and can get most clothes off but only a little bit back on. Will play happily with most toys but very into puzzles, matching games and colouring at the moment.

His sleep is mostly rubbish though!

MortifiedAdams · 30/07/2013 19:58

DD 19mo can count to 14 (inc counting objects); knows blue yellow red and orange; wide vocab inc sorry, thank you, pardon me etc. Knows animal names and their noises, body parts, sings a couple of lines out of her favourite nursery rhymes. PHysically, no potty training yet but she does go and fetch a nappy when she knows she wants her bum changed Grin, feeds herself and manages a lidded cup, yet tp try an unlidded one. Doesnt know any alphabet.

TwelveLeggedWalk · 30/07/2013 20:00

Ceeveebee I have boy-girl twins of similar age and similar speech variation, interesting!
Will be interested to hear the HV's take on it at their two year check.

MrsGyllenhaal · 30/07/2013 20:15

My DS2 is 19 months. He still has a lidded sippy cup. I dread to think of the mess he'd make with a normal cup. He has around 30 words now including 'more' 'all gone' 'moon' 'nah' (no!) and 'Joe' (his brother's name).

He knows a few animal sounds, dog, lion, monkey, pig and will make his arm wave around like a trunk when we ask him what an elephant does.

He loves cars and says 'brumm brum' and 'neee nawww' when he sees or hears an ambulance or police car.

He says 'poo' when he's filled his nappy and will lay back when we ask him to so we can change him.

He can point to body parts, head, nose, hands, legs, feet, mouth, eyes and ears.

He 'sings' twinkle twinkle little star and does the hand movements to it.

He doesn't count and I don't think he knows any colours yet although he does say 'blue' but points to red or green Hmm .

He eats well with a fork. Makes a mess with a spoon but can do it.

He can throw a ball pretty well and understands simple rolling the ball and passing it to each other games.

He sleeps 13 hours a night (thank GOD).

He's very clingy in the day though and will get upset if a door between us gets closed, even though he's not always botherd if I leave the room, h likes to know he can get to me so panics if the door is closed behind me. Coonsequently, I pee and poo with the toilet door open! Grin

He also whinges a fair bit even though tantrums haven't really started yet.

He's pretty similar to how our DS1 was except DS1 was pickier with food. DS2 will , eat everything.

Descriptivist · 30/07/2013 22:42

DD is just 18 months. Nowhere near ready for toilet training! But starting to say 'poo' and 'wee' when she's done one or the other. Counts 1,2,3,4 but mostly just says 3 because she likes the sound of it :) Good with a spoon but not really able for a fork and rarely uses either (see my other thread Hmm). Can drink fine from a glass with some monitoring but mostly uses a lidded cup her favourite games involve spilling liquids so it's just too much cleaning.

About 100 words and understands all instructions; starting to patch together little sentences now e.g. Dad Gone Car. Is just starting to get the hang of red, blue and yellow - said 'Mama Red' today when she found a red T-shirt of mine in the washing machine. No alphabet but loves books.

Sleeps a blissful 12 hrs or thereabouts at night and has done since about 13 months when I stopped feeding at night. Tantrums very easily and she seems very strong-willed, but the tantrums tend not to last particularly long - I think this is because she is a finger-sucker and can self-soothe quite quickly. The finger-sucking worries me a little bit because it goes on all day and I can't see her ever giving it up without a battle.

It's mad reading this thread about all the different things these little people can do. they have only been in the world for a year and a half!

rhetorician · 30/07/2013 22:56

Dd2 is nearly 20mo. I've not introduced any numbers, although if you ask her to hand over one blueberry, she will after some persuasion knows some colours, can find yellow pencil, can say some others. Lots of words all of a sudden. Sits on potty and toilet, knows what they are for. Knows what writing is. Very good at Lego. Can attempt to copy a simple picture. Sings twinkle twinkle. Says please and thank you (danke! We don't speak German...). Loves to put on and take off clothes. Runs, jumps, tries to do forward rolls. Laughs a lot. Can feed herself with fork or spoon, drink out of open cup and does so with alacrity!! 4 yo can barely manage this.

She sounds delectable PrayingforBeatrice and I'm so sorry to hear what you've both been through (but so glad to hear that she is doing so very well).

I would agree that most of the children described on this thread sound a little ahead of average - which is possibly why we were all drawn to posting on it! Really doesn't mean a jot though: at this age or indeed ever.

rhetorician · 30/07/2013 23:37

praying I think that's a really important point. I should say that I post what dd2 can do because I am a bit amazed by her. Other than talking well, dd1 couldn't do any of these things at the same age, totally different trajectory of development.

rhetorician · 30/07/2013 23:38

Anyway, your dd is more amazing than any of the other kids on here!

Beatrice- my daughter is 18 months and sounds very similar to yours! Especially the kissing! She can say about ten to fifteen words, but no where near sentences, yet always makes herself understood, doesn't know her colours and can't count! They all get there in the end!

AnotherStitchInTime · 31/07/2013 00:22

17 month old dd2 has over 50 words.

Counts by rote to 3 every time, but sometimes more.

No colour words yet, but does draw in scribbles and asks me to draw animals for her.

Can say if she has done a poo, no awareness of wees, no where near potty training. Dd1 was telling me she had done a wee at 18 months, was day time trained by 2.

Climbs steps on climbing frames and navigates them well.

Walks quite a distance although mostly in the direction she wants to go in.

Eats with spoon and fork, but prefers hands.

Can drink from an open cup, but likes watering so generally has a lidded one.

Builds with Lego duplo and larger blocks. Wooden block towers of 8+ blocks.

Plays with plastic animals and trains making pretend noises, animals have conversations in their noises.

Runs, jumps with two feet, dances, spins around.

Sings several nursery rhymes to herself with some of the words correct.

Points to things and asks "what's that?" including letters (has older sister so exposed to phonics through her).

Likes reading books - will point and ask about pics, turns pages and holds them the right way up.

Still wakes for a feed or two in the night.

Tantrums and throws herself on the floor or gives you cuddles when told off.

It's very encouraging to read the variations.

DS is only 11mths and was ahead of his peers at 5mths - sitting comfortably unaided - but still doesn't roll, crawl (he bounces) or walk. He can only stand for a short time with help before collapsing. He is nowhere near pulling himself up. His peers are crawling all over the place and it makes me a bit sad to see him unable to join in (or bouncing behind too slow to get involved Sad )

Please keep sharing the normal ones!

ceeveebee · 31/07/2013 09:49

Brain - my DD wasn't crawling or pulling herself up at 11 months (and got referred to physio by a slightly over zealous HV) but started walking at 14 months and will not sit down now at 20 months. DS pulled to standing from 9 months but didn't walk until 17 mo!

I posted up above about my twins - DD is streets ahead of DS - I thought he was a little behind but perhaps in fact she is just a bit ahead from reading some of the later posts.

ClairesTravellingCircus · 31/07/2013 10:19

I have nearly 18 month old twins (minus one week) and neither can say anything other than 'mummy'! They understand everything though and will nod for 'yes' and shake their heads for 'no'.
They can use spoon-fork, but dtd prefers hands Grin.
Crawled at 9ish months, walked at 13 and now climbing all over the place!

And tdt can push herself on the swing [stealth boastGrin]

ClairesTravellingCircus · 31/07/2013 10:21

Ooh and dtb has a mean right kick when playing footballGrin!
