How to correct walking on tiptoes? Any advice?

Ds is now pulling himself up and cruising along furniture, but only ever walks on tiptoes, or even worse on the backs of his toes so his feet are bent right over. It looks so uncomfortable.

Any ideas how to correct this? Or is this just part of the natural development of walking?

Could be just a phase? I'm thinking that there are all sorts of ways babies get about - bottom shufflers, commando crawlers etc and they can be very idiosyncratic in the way they move - but we all end up walking in much the same fashion on two feet. I'd give it a few weeks maybe or ring your HV and ask.

The next Rudolph Nureyev (sp?) perhaps?!

if he is just walking it will probably settle down, my ds did this and he was an early walker. He settled down at about 15 mths 6 mths after starting to walk

He has had a walker which I didn't want him to have but was a christmas pressie, and he loved it and as it was so easy to plonk him in it when I was busy in the kitchen so he's been in it a little every day (hangs head in shame)

I really do think it's the walker, and I never really noticed it until he started pulling himself up and cruising just how bad it was.

Somebody in rl suggested getting him a proper pair of shoes

PanicPants, please don't feel guilty about the walker. DS3 has a tiptoe habit (though not to an extent that has required action beyond constant nagging...) and he's never had a walker. The shoes may help; DS3 walks on tiptoe less when he has a nice new inflexible pair.

Hi PanicPants

My dd does this too, and she's never had a walker. I just assumed it was a phase. The doctor saw her do this last week at her 8 month check and didn't seem to think it was a problem, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

As Emmylou says - perhaps you could speak to your HV (if s/he's any good!) for reassurance.

my dd used to walk on her tip toes or with her toes bent right over, and this was also when she had her walker, but i think it just went to fast for her. She started walking about her 1st birthday and she is now 14 months. I got her fitted for her first shoes yesterday but she was only a 3 and didnt have proper hard soles so had to get a cruiser from clarks, but the assistant said that because she has been walking for more than 8 weeks she needs something and this will probably sort her tip toe walking out, although to be honest she hardly does it now as she is walking slow and on he own now.

Thanks everyone. Feel a bit less guilty about the walker now - thought I'd damaged him for life!

We did get him measured for shoes yesterday and he was a 2 and a half G!! We bought him a little pair of clarks shoes but as it's so hot at the moment I haven't put them on him.

They look like bricks on his feet and look like they really weigh him down! So they might help!

(Oh but isn't the tiny shoe box adorable!)

I still walk on tiptoes, especially if I'm barefoot.

PanicPants · 09/06/2006 09:52

lol hunker!
