Not so much role play games but more ' ah help there is a dragon in the garden, oh no he bit my fingers off, quick we need to find something to catch him'

My ds is 3.9 and hes been doing this stuff for ages and loves to play with his older cousins. But whenever we have kids round to play who are the same age they look at him like hes gone crazy. Do other peoples three year olds do this?

I should add that he is very gentle and totally appreciates its a game. I dont think he is scaribg the other kids.

Some kids just don't tbh. I have two DDs and one is obsessive with her imaginary dinosaurs etc and always has been...but the other is a bit Hmm about that sort of play.

Some children prefer more ordered games...with rules etc....others like playing specifically with toys...you'll find that he will connect with kids like himself when he's at school.

My DS is 2y5m and does lots of "pretend play" eg pretending to run a cafe, cooking food for us, getting all his animals to talk to each other etc.

Thanks. I wondered if for some kids it just isnt their thing. He gets really disappointed cos he looks forwards to having kids to play and then they just dont seem to get what he is doing. I was startibg to get worried he wouldnt be able to make friends at school cos nobody would be interested in what he likes to do.

Another 2yo who does this stuff unprompted. And makes jokes during his imagination games.

laeiou · 18/07/2013 19:56

In fact I know a 20mo who does it.

Can some of your kids come round play with him??!!

Peanut he'll meet a tonne of kids like him when school starts...he'll love it! My DD2 was thrilled as she finally had mates who liked her kind of games. My older DD will sit and craft stuff...or paint her nails over and over and over

Ds is 6 now but has been doing this since he could talk just about! I remember aged about 3 having his friend round and ds said 'argh run away from the monster!!!' And his friend said 'there's no such thing as monsters' Ds was most perplexed, he knew monsters didn't exist, just like he knew he wasn't really driving a train / flying / running a shop but he didn't let a minor detail like that stop him!

Dd is 2y9m and does it too but I wonder if its because she's watched and learned iyswim?

Dd1 never really did. She likes reality.
Dd2 and ds both were playing that sort of games by 2yo, ds probably because dd2 brought him into the games to join her. They (age 9 and 6 now) are quite capeable of sitting in the garden with nothing and playing a complicated game of imagination.
