Hayfever in toddler/young child

My DS is 2.5 and on certain days gets a mild/moderate hayfever. The main symptom is his runny nose and itchy face. I've never given him anything but now he needs something as really starting to bother him. I have 3 options apparently; Piriton (chorophenamine), Benadryl (cetiridine) or Loratidine. The pharmacist said Piriton is most drowsy, then the Benadryl and then the other one. I've heard from a close friend that a GP said not to use Piriton because there have been some concerning case studies. Anyone got any views before i buy?

Hi

I heard piriton is no good also.A friend recommended one for my lb (almost 2)
It's called boots allergy relief (own brand) it's around £3 & has worked wonders the last few days.I don't like giving medicine but I too had to give in about 2 days ago.
Good luck its horrible seeing them suffer :-(

Have you considered manuka honey or local honey. I've just started it after years of meds and it actually works.

We were prescribed the last one on your list (in NZ). Had no side effects that I could see. Dose was 2ml once a day.

I would also recommend a nasal spray.

hi, hope you don't mind me asking, what was the problem with Piriton??

My DD 2.6 has hayfever and she's been prescribed Piriton but a bit nervous about giving it to her now Confused x

I believe it can cause drowsiness that's all but that's just a possible side effect.you may get on ok with it :)

DD2(12) gets on ok with Benadryl, strangely this year is the first year ever she hasn't needed it.

Very odd as everyone says the pollen is bad this year and DD1, who is normally fine, has been snuffling and DD1 who's had hay fever every summer from 6months old isn't Confused

My DD, just 4, is on certirizine after 2 yrs of loratadine. Her hay fever is bad though - eye symptoms so bad that she scarred her tear ducts shut and needed an operation. She's on 5ml 3xdaily plus drops for outdoor play. No fun!
