My 5 day old won't settle at all unless he's on my boob continually which would be ok except he's then sicking up loads of milk and v gassy yet continues to root.

I don't know what to do to make him settle/happy. Please help.

Hi, ime thats kind of how it goes into he beginning and your best of settling in for the long haul. It pays of tho as bf gets well established. When you need a break wind him thoroughly, put him in his bed and go out the room . he might cry but he won't come to any harm. Make sure when you go back your settled into a comfy seat with your phone, remote, good book, cushions, drink, wet wipes, nappy etc to hand. It won't take long to past this stage so try to enjoy the excuse to sit down and cuddle. Kellymum.com has great advice on breastfeeding, have a look on there. Good luck!

Try keeping him upright in a sling. Sounds very like DS and he turned out to have reflux. He wanted to feed constantly because then the acid was being swallowed down instead of coming up.

If you're worried talk to your GP or MW. It pays to sort reflux early.

Has he been checked for tongue tie? My dd was exactly the same from day 1 which was odd as her older brother had growth spurts where he'd be stuck to the boob but in between those (in the first few weeks), he'd sleep loads. They both had reflux - DD's tongue tie was the cause.

It is pretty normal at this stage for you to feel like they are trying to feed every second they are awake. Your milk supply is being established and you need to try to go with the flow, safe in the knowledge that it shouldn't last long.

Don't try to get anything else done. Just sit back and go with it. They often tend to bring milk up with every burp and you feel like they are vomiting everything they're drinking.

Get your midwife to check his latch just in case.

You can also give him your little finger with the nail cut short to suck on for a bit just to give your boobs a break.

Enjoy all those lovely newborn cuddles Smile

Agree with all the others. Its in his interests to stay close to you, so that's what he's doing. Afterall he's spent 9 months tucked up inside you. Smile

Was going to ask if he's been checked for tongue tie too. This could just be normal baby behaviour though. Have you read Bfing your newborn: what to expect?

Will he settle on dad? Will he settle if you lie next to him in bed? Have a google of "youtube Richard and judy happiest baby". A video should come up of a great way to settle grouchy babies Smile
