17 month old waking several times at night

My son is 17 months old normal happy, active little boy but for the past month he has been waking several times during the night, at first he would settle with us sitting in the room and would sleep for the rest of the night but then he started waking when we left the room and we became so tired he kept ending up in bed with us. About 2 weeks ago we decided enough is enough he has to sleep in his own bed, he will settle to sleep reasonably well, we have to stay in the room until he falls asleep but he wakes by about 12 and I keep ending up falling asleep on his floor until he settles, I can then sneak off to bed undetected but then he wakes up an hour later and starts to cry again the cycle continues.

I tried controlled crying but it made him hysterical and he tried to climb out his cot. We are working on him settling himself to sleep as around 3 months ago he was being rocked to sleep. We are just at the end of our tether now. My husband and I are so tired I feel constantly sick! We initially put all this down to teething but its going on and on and on. Help any advice would be very appreciated.

Does he have a pacifier or sleepy transition soft toy? My DS was rocked to sleep for a long time cos he had reflux and is high needs, so very alert and finds t really difficult to wind down.. I introduced a sleep toy thing (a safe one for sleeping cant remember what they r called) which we call batty, as he has become very attached to it, cries if he cant find it during the night, but helps him go to sleep and stay asleep with it..

Do you think he has separation anxiety or going thru developmental milestone? Does he have any music to sleep with? We still use lullabies to go to sleep then very soft rain white noise, but it is gradually reduced to hardly there at all now, but saved many nights of disturbed sleep.

Sounds like he is waking up after the first deep sleep part of night, then is aware you are no longer there..its so so hard i know how you feel, we have been battling sleep since birth, DS is 15mths now slowly improving with age. What are his day sleeps like? Is he overtired therefore more prone to waking at night (my DS has this issue all the time as he isnt a good day napper).

Could it be trapped wind, is he eating "windy foods" at dinner ? This has caused my toddler's numerous night time wakings.
