10 month old not crawling or moving

Ds is 10 months and cannot move. He can roll but never does, he can reach for stuff and almost looks like he might crawl but seems to have his legs stuck and can't work out what to do. Can't pull himself up and can't get from tummy to sitting.
Hv says he is to be reviewed at 12 months but that she wasn't concerned.
I know you shouldn't compare but all his peers are crawling and pulling up and just doing so much more so I'm quite worried about him. Just wondering how 'normal' he sounds to you all.

Is he chunky? DD was like this, she was a big baby. She didn't roll or crawl but did walk at 11months. I believe it was because she was quite chubby.

DS is 9 months and is a Long thin baby, he's much more mobile than DD was, he rolls, crawls etc

Even if you're DS is not chunky, he will get on the move eventually. Relax, some babies just take a bit longer.

One he's moving, you'll be wishing he'd sit in one place!

bubbatime · 04/07/2013 00:39

my ds crawled at 11 mths. walked at 16mths. he was just laid back. still is...

Smallgreenone · 04/07/2013 00:41

He's not enormous........75th centile for weight and height.
I know I'll wish he was still immobile once he's on the move and getting into everything but I feel I'm wishing his life away waiting for him to do something!

Ds1 never crawled. He sat on his arse and then upped and walked at 12 months with no inbetween bit.

Ds2 also didn't crawl in the traditional sense, he bear walked (hands and feet) for a few months, then righted himself and properly walked.

So out of 3 kids I only had one crawler.

It's not actually a developmental milestone as a significant number of children never do it.

wintersdawn · 04/07/2013 00:45

my dd never crawled and point blank refused to do tummy time, would just scream herself sick. She just went straight to walking at 11months. one of her friends didn't crawl till 12 months and didnt walk till nearly 18 another was non stop crawling at 8 months. Guess what at 26 months you couldn't guess which did which. don't worry too much.

Doitnicelyplease · 04/07/2013 02:18

My DD2 was the same and she just started crawling a week after her first birthday. So proud of her and great to see her finally getting around. She is a chunky little thing and never liked tummy time, she was content to sit for months and months!

She only learnt to get into sitting position from lying down a week before her birthday too.

Don't worry it will happen.

prissyenglisharriviste · 04/07/2013 02:52

summer, it's not a developmental milestone for kids who aren't being closely monitored and having physio and other early interventions. Grin it's very much a developmental milestone if you happen to have a baby with significant developmental delays. Grin it's all they ever ask you. Grin

Op, he sounds fine. Give it another couple of months and you'll be wondering what you were worrying about.

Morning, I'm remember writing a very similar thread about my son at this age. He commando crawled from about 11 months suddenly then as the months went by pulled himself up, started cruising about the sofa. This seemed to go on for months until he had the courage to let go (I took him to a soft play area and he got up and walked for an hour and my jaw was on the floor) he must have felt more safe. From 15 months he didn't stop walking. You'll look back when it happens and think what was I worried about, it comes to them all. As with the comparing, I've learnt not to and you will in time! My sisters baby was 3 days younger and she walked 7 months before my son, the difference is incredible! Just concentrating on different things, I used to hate people saying that to me but its true! Have a good day and enjoy him whilst he's not everywhere

Smallgreenone · 04/07/2013 09:04

Thank you all so much. Seems like it is relatively normal then! He does hate tummy time so although I try it with him we never last long as he really protests about it. Hopefully as you all say in a month or so I'll be wondering what I was worrying about.

My youngest showed no interest in crawling or rolling or moving at all. Suddenly around 14 months she started walking. She is now the fastest and sportiest of all my kids. The HV said crawling is not a milestone as so many kids don't do it. But I found hearing it direct from HV very reassuring. They asked me to check in at 18 months if I was still concerned.

spotscotch · 04/07/2013 10:31

Op don't worry he sounds very similar to my ds, who has also always been in on the 75th centile. Ds was always behind his peers in terms of moving around. Didn't even really start moving until he was about 11 months, but it wasn't crawling, it was a sort of walrus/worm style drag! Didn't properly crawl until he was over a year. He hated tummy time as well. Didn't start pulling up until about 15 months (I can't even remember now which shows how unimportant it is!). And when he did start pulling up, he did it by straightening his legs and bringing them towards the thing he was holding, not doing the normal bending one leg then the other. Finally started walking at 18 (nearly 19) months, but couldn't stand up by himself until 20 months. Now at 22 months, he is doing e everything completely normally and has totally caught up. But I was worried at some points.

I am sure he will get there in the end! I am sure you have been trying it, but the way ds first started his worm shuffle was for me to put something he liked (in his case his dummy!) Out of reach so he had to work to get it.

spotscotch · 04/07/2013 10:33

And yes,it is so hard not to compare isn't it! My ds and my friend's ds started walking on the same day. My ds was 9 months older!

miffybun73 · 04/07/2013 10:39

MY DCs are now 3 and 5.

They both crawled at 12 months and started walking round the furniture at about 14 months. Didn't walk until 23 months.

Both are developing completely normally now.

MrsGSR · 04/07/2013 10:43

My cousin just sat there until he was 16 months, my mean aunts and uncles used to put toys just out of his reach and he'd just stare at them! He's now an adult and had worked as a gymnast, dancer and skiing instructor so didn't do him any harm!

Smallgreenone · 04/07/2013 12:28

Smile mrsgsr
I have been putting toys out of his reach and he does stretch for them but he's been doing that for weeks now and never seems to progress. Still seems that its not unheard of and I'll try and relax until he's a bit older.
I wonder if there will ever be a day I don't worry?!
Thanks for sharing your experiences it is reassuring.

DD1 did not move at all (other than sitting and rolling) until 2 days before her first birthday, when she started to bum shuffle. She did not walk until 19 months (bum shufflers are often later walkers) and she only learned to crawl after she could walk! There was no physical problem - she just took her time. I did find it frustrating seeing all these 12 month olds walking when she had only just started moving around, but maybe we were just unlucky in knowing lots of people with relatively early walkers. The thing is that they are all different, and once they start walking you wouldn't know whether they first did it at 10 months or 20.

Pinebarrens · 04/07/2013 17:17

oh yes I've just remembered DD hated tummy time . DS loves it, always has.

it really is quite normal at 10 months.

enjoy this age, i love them around this age, their little personalities start to shine through Smile

Owllady · 04/07/2013 17:21

some babies need to be shown how to do it ime by moving their arms legs for them whilst supporting the stomach but actually learning to roll is more important for muscle development, crawling is motor

I am sure he is fine but if you are offered a bit of physio support I would take it anyway as it's better to be on the waiting list rather than not iykwim

This post sounds rather negative sorry! I don't mean it like that at all, he does sound fine

Smallgreenone · 04/07/2013 19:05

Oh we'll definitely take physio if its offered, it certainly can't hurt.
pinebarrens i love this age too,he is an adorable boy, so smiley and happy, just lazy perhaps Smile

Have you tried leaving the lid off the sudocreme, putting it just out of his reach and turning around?

Smallgreenone · 05/07/2013 16:23

No! But I will

Op, my DS is 10 months and had his check today! He is exactly the same - has rolled maybe 10 times in his life, hates tummy time, can't pull himself up, doesn't bear weight if you hold him up (he just bounces or deliberately sits down). In the last week he has started doing a weird backwards commando crawl, which he gets really cross about as he is getting further away from his toys! I am just trying not to stress about it. He's on 75th centile for length, but 98th for weight Blush so is a big boy. He's very dexterous with his hands, and very vocal, and I think he's just putting all his efforts into those things at the moment.

Smallgreenone · 14/07/2013 10:35

Update for you all, he crawled this morning! Woo hoo! Now I can find something new to worry about!
