Hi all,
I took my toddler to a music group today and he was the old kid running about and obsessed with the doors ! A few people said oh you have a handful there!
Just curious , anyone else's 20 month old like this ? He is just so active , runs all the time :-)

Yes, absolutely, although my ds is not yet walking, he crawls everywhere at top speed. He's also completely uninterested in any sort of organised activity or anything that requires sitting/participating. I think it's his age, like your ds, he just wants to do his own thing and explore. I've given up on groups and stuff for now, I stick to things like soft play, I'm sure when he's a bit older he'll want to join in, it's just a phase.

That's good to know. Before he could walk he would crawl very fast to explore every part of the room. I think he just gets so excited about being somewhere new as at home he can sit and look at a book or do a puzzle . I guess they are all different , it would just be nice to sit and have a cup of tea once in a while instead of chasing him all over the place ! :-)

My DS1 was a very active baby, always running and climbing! He's now a very well behaved 7yo Smile

Tumble , that's good to know. Did he ever go through a pushing other kids stage ?

No, sorry, he didn't. DS2 did though - he was pretty active too - and he's over it now thank goodness!

kelda · 04/07/2013 19:31

Totally normal, and healthy at this age. All my three -girls and boy - were like this.

ChazDingle · 04/07/2013 19:38

My DS was the same at that age, he's just turned 3 and is slightly better now but he's still the least likely to sit still in a group of kids.

Skillbo · 04/07/2013 20:15

DD, now 4 is slightly calmer now (only slightly Smile ) but i couldn't get her to ever stop! Its a tough one as it might be nice to do the 'sitting, peaceful' thing occasionally but it is a part of who she is so i just grin and bear it!

Plus, i think being active is a good thing for small kids as it keeps them fit and healthy and, you never know, could lead to big things as they grow!

Jakeyblueblue · 04/07/2013 23:47

My ds 2.0 is like this. Never stops ever. Wouldn't sit still in a group of children In million years. Runs everywhere. Dances and jumps and climbs and explores constantly and more recently, chatters constantly!
Going on a seaside holiday in August and have already resigned myself to the fact there will be no sitting on the beach for me!!!

TwasBrillig · 04/07/2013 23:53

Mine are both very active. My 20 month old is my number 2 and this time around I'm not bothering with music or sitting still type groups (s!they'll have years of that ahead anyway!).

So far we've just been to toddler groups where she can run around and play with what she wants to, soft play and outdoor play areas. She's happy.

In September I'll do a mum and toddler swimming group and maybe a kids gym but not at all anything too structured or sitting still. Don't see the point!

OddBodd · 05/07/2013 19:03

Yep! Both my boys have been like this. DS2 (18 months) is obsessed with doors! My DS1 was obsessed with the fire extinguishers at toddler group. Neither of them have been able to sit and do the songs at the end, they were/ are the ones running, crawling, still playing while all the others sat nicely and enjoyed all the organised activities.

It doesn't bother me now with DS2 but with DS1 I was so worried and thought everyone was judging me! Anyway, he's 5 now and is a lovely, well behaved, calm, well mannered little boy so it's just their age! I am hoping DS2 calms down soon..... think it took DS1 til her was nearly three though!

Thanks for the replies. Its good to know there are others out there like my lo! I am going to give up on the music groups for a while.

i am so happy that I read this thread, my 19 month old just never stops running and exploring. Today we tried toddler yoga, all other toddlers calm and joining in...I was beginning to wonder if I was doing something wrong as a parent, back to thinking am muddling through okay now!

ChazDingle · 05/07/2013 21:02

on the plus side i've had a few issues with DS lately and HV came round to see him. I mentioned the never sitting still thing especially when he was a baby, eg. other kids would be happy to sit and play with a few toys but he would be off opening doors and pulling wires off the walls. HV thinks DS is very intelligent and basically gets bored if things aren't stretching him so thats why he tends to walk off. Not sure how true this is but its a postive to think off when you're child seems like the worse behaved child in a group
