2 year old & newborn

Help! I'm going to have a newborn and a nearly 2 year old... Aaaarrrrrggggghhhhhh!!! Grin

My stupid questions are:-

We already have a cot bed which DD sleeps in as a cot at the mo. when newborn comes out if Moses should I put him/her in cot bed & buy DD one of those toddler beds? Or should I buy a normal cot for newborn & let DD stay in cotbed... Then when she outgrows this put her into a single and newborn into cotbed.... Confused!!

And, will I need a double buggy???

Thanks.

I have a 19 month gap. I think the bed thing is personal preference but I could not manage without a double buggy.

MrsRV · 21/06/2013 20:38

I kind of thought that would be given but read a couple of other posts where super duper children were walking completely on their own and going on mountain climbs and also rats (I may be slightly exaggerating but that's how if felt reading some if the stuff I found!) Grin

What have you done about cots/cotbeds/normal beds???

"Also rats" aka "all sorts" Grin

I definitely think you need a double buggy (we have a 21 month gap). Even if you have a great walker, sometimes you'll want / need to get somewhere more quickly than they can walk! And if the weather is bad I think it seems a bit mean to stick the big one on a buggy board in the rain.

Bed = personal preference, but we kept our big one in his bed (still there at 2.6) as he wasn't trying to climb out and I didn't want to get disturbed sleep from returning a toddler to bed as well as being woken by the little one...

Congratulations and FWIW I think it's a lovely age gap ; )

I had a larger gap (2y5m) and I had a double buggy as I don't have a car and needed to walk distances that the toddler couldn't always cope with. Was able to ditch the double buggy when oldest was around 3 as he became a serious scooter boy.

I think we booted oldest out of the cotbed just before youngest was born and put him into a normal bed, was fine. Youngest was in a moses basket for about 4 months anyway as she was fairly dinky.

We've got a 17 day old DS2 and ds1 (just 2) is still in j's cot bed. We've found another cot to use when DS2 comes out of his moses basket/crib. Didn't want to rush DS1 out if cot as he just doesn't seem ready yet although plan to take sides off very soon.

still working on where this second cot will go as getting DH to empty out his room full of crap is going v slowly

MrsRV · 21/06/2013 21:02

Dizzy Hubby just said "we need to sort that room out". Bedroom 3 is currently a very big cupboard Grin

I was thinking options are to either buy a cot and leave DD1 in cot/cotbed. Then DD1 can go into single & DC2 can go into cotbed.

Or, buy a toddler bed and hoof DD1 out of cot/cotbed into toddler bed so newborn can have cot when he/she comes out of Moses (DD1 was like yours dizzy & in Moses until 4 months-ish).

Seeing it in black & white I think we'll go for another cot to make sure DD1 isn't rushed in a strange room & a strange bed all at once. Also, I like earlier point about having DD1 in cot with sides without her escaping in the night!!! Grin

Thanks all.

I will now appreciate benefits of cot with sides for ds1! We're lucky in that a family member has been keeping their (16yo!) daughters cot in case she wants to use it for her children Hmm so we justneed a mattress. I am much less fussy about 2nd hand stuff this time round!

MrsRV · 21/06/2013 21:17

Ha, you learn the unnecessary expensive lessons first time round huh!?!

I'm due dd2 when ds is 21 months, ds has been in a single bed since 14 months i hate toddlers in cots but that's my issue we bought a new cot as he ate the foot ends of his Hmm

We've bought a single pram, sling, twin pram plus kept ds's buggy and stroller so all bases are covered Grin

I don't tend to take more than one dc out at a time as it is but at least this way i can:

pram dd -walk ds
Put ds in pram- sling dd
Twin pram them
Take ds in buggy - sling dd

And a few other ways about Grin we considered a buggy board instead of a twin pram but it'd not be fair on ds in winter plus he can be very high maintenance in general let alone when outside Hmm

MrsRV · 21/06/2013 21:52

OMG big red pants that is a lot of prams!!!!!! Currently we have 1 pushchair, my beloved icandy strawberry. I'll need to get a cheaply stroller when bump gets too big & I can't lug beloved and incredibly heavy pushchair in & out of car. Then we'll get a double than coverts to a single. It's all very complicated isn't it!?!?!

I have an addiction Blush it's too complicated for my liking and i just know half my options won't get used Hmm doesn't stop my buying 'just in case' though Grin

ellesabe · 22/06/2013 09:13

I would you you'd definitely need a double buggy. We have a 23mo age gap and are still using the double buggy 7 months on.

With the sleeping arrangements, we were limited somewhat due to lack of space and bought a Shanticot ...They're amazing!

Dd1 sleeps underneath in the bed and dd2 is on top in thd cot. In a year we will convert it to bunk beds and have dd2 on the bottom bunk instead.

RoadToTuapeka · 22/06/2013 12:09

I have a 24 month gap between DS1 and Ds2. dS1 is now 2.5yrs old. DS1 was quite happy in a cot, happy with a baby sleeping bag & not asking for a bed or trying to climb out of cot so we have kept him in his cot & borrowed a cot (new mattress) for DS2.
Double buggy absolutely indispensible. Thought I could get by with baby sling for DS2 & buggy or walking for DS1 but was wildly impractical esp going to supermarket etc, what with all the gubbins you take for a nb, or if did not take buggy but DS1 suddenly did not want to walk, and was great when I did actually borrow an old Phil & Reds, suddenly felt more mobile (hated the P&T itself and ended up buying a Baby Jogger city elite but that is a whole other thread).
All the best with the new arrival & adjusting to two!

MrsRV · 22/06/2013 21:54

Is city elite different to city select?
