Hi folks, my 21 mo DS has recently started chatting in his cot at bedtime -he doesnt cry or shout out for us but once we put him to bed at about 7.30 he sits / laysin his cot chatting and singing until about 9pm. im concerned that hes not getting enough sleep because he still wakes up between 6.30-7pm. he still has a daytime nap, usually 1-3pm but sometimes he will chat for the first hour of this. he's really progressing with his speech at the moment so i've just put it down to him processing his new wordss and committing them to memory...but 9pm seems a little late.
any ideas / experience of this?
Thanks

as long as he is quite happy and not distressed then there isnt much you can do as you cant force him to go to sleep.

i was wondering whether i should move his nap earlier (hes always ready by 12 but i like him to have lunch first) or make it shorter. i tried wearing him out running him round the park this afternoon and i was sure it would do the trick...but no!

My dd has always been like this, and still so at 6........as long as he's happy there really is nothing you can do. Scooted all afternoon with mine today and dd still looking at books and singing

my 2.5yo does this too. In bed by 7.30 but reads books in there till 8.30 or 9. I don't mind as he doesn't leave his room, adn is quite happy pottering around. I could maybe drop his nap but I love it!

Leave nap! We had similar with ds at that age & tried cutting the nap back to help his bedtimes, but he just got really overtired. We soon realised it was a developmental thing (due to language explosion) & it soon settled back down & ds continued with his 2hr nap 1-3pm & 8pm bedtime (up 6.30-7) til he was around 2.5 & started dropping his nap.

Hang in there!

Ffs I'm on my phone and hit the wrong key.

Meant to say my 20 month old sings himself to sleep. Usually falls asleep quickly tho. He's up about 7.30/8.30 and I give him lunch early and put him down for nap around 12/12.30 till 2.30 ish. He doesn't go to bed till 8pm tho. Even on the days he doesn't get his nap at all.

If he's happy I wouldn't worry, it's good he settles himself

My daughter is 20 months old and also chats for ages when she goes to bed. If anything, it feels like when she's had a full on day, she chats for longer. I always feel she is maybe processing what's happened to her. Her nap time is similar to yours, so I wouldn't worry about it!
