Counting to ten

At what age did your child learn to count to ten?

He can recite one to ten now, and could since he could say the words, but he can only count with help. he is 3.

In terms of simply reciting the numbers, DD could do that by about the age of 2. She is now 2.5 and has a concept of one, two and three. So if she sees one bus, will say 'one bus' and if she sees two can say 'two busses'. Can go up to three, but past that, everything is five!

Both by 2 , but there is a huge differnence between rote counting and recognising the numerical correspondence and meaning.

I think it depends on what you mean by "counting". Ds (2.3) has been able to say the number names, by rote, in order to 10 for a few months, but he can't count 10 objects accurately. He can count 4 fairly accurately (How many bricks have you got? and he points and counts, but anything over 5 and he gets confused). Counting and totalling a group of 10 objects is a Reception target, so most 4 and 5 years olds should be able to. Saying numbers to 10, then probably earlier. HTH

Both could recite beyond 10 before 2 (I remember DS2 counting up to 20 on the steps on the waterslide on holiday when he was 22 months), but I'm not sure about counting with one-to-one correspondence.

I know DS1 counted 14 things accurately when he was 2y8m because it's one of the few random things about his babyhood I jotted down - I must have been struck by it at the time. Can't remember DS2 counting beyond about 6 accurately until he was 3.5.

DD could recite 1 to 10 at 20 months. I know this as it was when our lift was out of order and we just to count the 144 steps in sets of 10! She was about 2.5 when she was able to actually count items and had a grasp of number placement.

my DS is three and 9 months and still can't reliably count to ten! of course reciting it from memory is what many pre-schoolers actually do, though he can't do this either!

2.2 for knowing the numbers and counting things as she was non verbal she used to count her fingers -
when she eventually talked at 3... she could count very well

2.5 now and dd knows what 1,2 and sometimes 3 are. Properly counted, that is. Just reciting, she can't do up to 10 in either of her languages - she really seems to not be interested, and just says 'one, two, five, ten!' as fast as possible, probably because it doesn't mean much to her.
She's fluent in 2 languages, knows a few letters, all her shapes and all the colours, but maybe maths isn't going to be her strong point

Only ever says "one, two" over and over
Has never even tried "three"
Every colour is also "yellow"

My son does'nt have much speach, he is 2.9 months. I found that teaching him using flash card's has really help him to count and recognise the number's. since useing them for about 3 weeks now, he can count to fourteen.

DD can do it now (3yrs) if she can be bothered, she does like to mix em up just for amusement

She tends to actually know up to 3 (as in "you can have 3 biscuits).

dd2 counted to ten at 18 months, shes now 2.3 and counts to 17.

dd1 counted to ten at 18 months, shes now 2.3 and counts to 17.

Hmmmmmmm silly me when I read the thread title, I thought you meant - when you have to count to ten to chill out
