Hi, I'm interested in when everyone thinks it's time to worry about swearing etc infront of the bundles of joy? I listen to a lot of talking books in my car and wondered when I need to change from blood thirsty novels to the classics!

heh. well my daughter said this am 'mum i need to go for a wee, i might pss myself' i just corrected her word and told her to go. she is almost 4btw. i think i started to watch my language when she was around 8months or so. saying that she still says the odd word that she shouldnt. i remember dropping a plate once and shouting crp as it smashed, i then heard a little voice saying cr*p over and over again. she must have been around 2years old then. i'm a bad mummy arent i.

As soon as DD started talking we asked everyone to be careful around her. Our friends can forget at times though as they aren't all used to having children around. She is now 21 months and like a parrot.

One day driving dh's car with dd (then 2) in the back, I had to brake very hard, managed not to swear, just - but dd shrieked 'Jesus' - no prizes for guessing where that came from, I went nuts !

marialuisa · 03/02/2004 22:14

Well, DD's nearly 3 and last night she told DH that "mummy's a shit" because I said there was no pudding uless she ate some of her main course (too busy chatting as per usual). This comes direct from my dbro. I was just very quiet and said that if mrs X (adored nurtsery teacher) heard her say that she'd have to sit on the naughty step. DD thinks only seriously BAD children ever sit there so she was suitably chastened.

charliecat · 03/02/2004 22:19

My dd1 never copied our bad language so we continued to swear regularly as she didnt say anything that made us so ashamed we thought we had better stop.
Dd2 however copys everything and in the last week ive had one session of her shouting FK in Safeways, giggling loudly and shouting it louder as i clamped my hand over her mouth.
My mums friend was reading her a book and when Noddy fell out of his car she said " oh bollocks" twice, loudly.
And the most horrifying was when Dp was putting face paints on her and she said "Bugger, I know what mummys going to say when she sees my face" and dp said "whats she going to say?" and dd age 3 said F
K IT.
Mortified and trying to stop my dreadful language.
DD is gorgeous lovely friendly etc and has a really cute voice it makes my heart stop when she swears....Bad Mummy, my only defence is dd1 didnt so i didnt expect dd2 too. Sad excuse.

Posey · 03/02/2004 22:44

When dd was about 3 she was in the car with my parents. Dad made a bit of a pigs ear of manoevering into a parking space and managed to hit a bollard. He was just about to come out with some expletive when a warning "John!" came from my mother. Dd in the back pipes up "I think he was going to say OH BUGGER"
Now she knows about swearing, knows she shouldn't say such words and will usually say "Oh, you said a naughty word". Usually has a little grin on her face though.

lydialemon · 04/02/2004 20:54

I try and watch my language, and I'm Ok at home but really really bad in the car. I'm lucky in that they don't copy me, but they do tell me off.

Coddy · 04/02/2004 20:56

Never mind that I was reading Heat "My sex life with Gareth" andhad tohide it from ds1

emsiewill · 05/02/2004 11:10

OMG! dd1 (7) was reading Heat last night. I'm pretty sure that she only looks at the TV listings, I never even thought about her reading that article. What a bad mother I am.

Very noticeable

I have a 4 and a half year old and a 2 year old- neither of whom talk. And my language is appalling. All my friends who used bad language miraculously stopped when their children started talking and somehow I carried on. I then met a friend with a non verbal dd - and her lanaguage was as bad as mine. Her ds is now speaking and her langauge is better. Once ds2 starts to talk I look forward to being far politer.

I still never swear in front of my mum though

Northerner · 05/02/2004 11:25

Just mentioned this on another thread but my ds (22 months) says SHIT quite alot at the moment, so much so nursery pointed this out to me yesterday. I must start saying sugar instead.

FairyMum · 05/02/2004 11:50

One of DS first words were SHIT and SHITE......My language is awful and I just can't help myself, even in front of the kids.....

janinlondon · 05/02/2004 12:08

My DH is so bad in front of DD she now looks at him sternly and chastises him: "LANGUAGE!!!" (she's 4 - he's 42!) My nephew (5yo) was once very bored at a family wedding and found that saying "Dad this is boring" didn't get him any attention, so loudly said "Dad this is F---ing boring". And guess what? It worked! What a dreadful family we are.

Chinchilla · 22/04/2004 22:45

My ds says 'Come on Grandad, what you doing?' whe we are behind a slow car. No idea where he gets it from!

grumpyzebra · 22/04/2004 22:58

There's a little boy at DS's playgroup who keeps getting told off for saying "wee" "willie" "poo"...
In meantime I stubbed my toe a few days ago and blurted out "Sh*t", which 4yo DS duly echoed. I'll die of embarrassment if he suddenly remembers it at playgroup.
