dd is 4, and has been day trained for a while now.. im expecting a new baby in november. i was planning on taking her out of night pullups before baby comes.

problem is, since then, dd has been recently found to have a kidney defect with a blocked ureter (drainage tube) which means her urine is retained, dilating her kidney.

she gets alot if kidney/bladder/ uti infections cos of it which in turn causes pain. she has accidents still where it makes it hard to control her bladder and gets upset by it (she likes being an independent big girl).

im considering delaying the night training until its treated (theres a waiting list at addenbrookes and she needs another dye scan) so it doesnt distress her to have night accidents.

but wouldnt that cause problems in getting her out of pullups later? especially with a new sibling?

im trying to figure out what would be better for her. what do you think? xx

I think I would stick with the pull-ups until she's had treatment, especially since you'll be having a new baby in the autumn. If you don't, and she has accidents, then she may well feel embarrassed/stressed which won't help the situation, especially as it's a medical issue causing her problems. I don't think you'll have much trouble banishing the pull-ups once she's received treatment because, at her age, it should be easy to motivate her to be dry at night. At 4, school is not far away and the effects of peer pressure will act as a very definite encouragement! Hope this helps.

Poor thing, tell her we all hope she gets better soon!

also a pull up will not stop her being dry at night. I thought that you were meant to wait until the night time nappies were dry?

I don't think you can night train - it just happens when tgey are ready. Something to do with the production of a certain hormone.

Given her medical issues I would definitely wait.

Themobstersknife · 01/06/2013 20:53

Kids do not need training to be dry at night. They will be dry when their hormones kick in. Its not considered to be an issue for girls to be wet at night up to the age of 6, 7 for boys. With her health problems and the new baby due, I would wait til her pull ups are consistently dry for a good few weeks before trying to go without. No point in upsetting her if she is not hormonally ready to be dry.

wl the reason why i thought about it was because some pullups are dry (not consistently though admittedly) and she was occasionally waking up in the night asking for the toilet.

thanks for the input xx

Sounds like she is nearly ready then. My nearly 4 yo was similar around Easter and has now been dry for about a month, no accidents. Good luck!

she woke up about midnight after weeing a little in her pull up.. took it off and went back to sleep, and stayed dry through the rest of the night. might get a waterproof mattress protector and sit her on the toilet before bed n see how she goes... going to grt the nod from the health visitor first though.. xx
