Worried about 3 yr old

Dd (3) is constantly complaining of being tired, even first thing in the morning. She genererally sleeps from 7.30 til 6.15 without waking up and doesn't nap in the day. When she is tired her talking deteriorates until she sounds like a baby and her eyes get sunken and heavy.

Mentally she seems pretty bright; knows her letters, draws people, can count objects and plays well imaginatively. Physically it is a different kettle of fish, she was quite late walking (18 months) and is uncoordinated- she is a mass of bruises from seemingly being unable to take 20 steps without falling over and still can't use her micro scooter!

She won't eat fruit but will eat carrot and cucumber sticks, she has a fairly healthy appetite but is intolerant to wheat. We re-introduced dairy in January and her eczema had flared up but she know longer vomits. I am wondering whether a side effect could also be that she is tired?

Sorry for the mammoth post i am actually asking: Should I take her to the doctor or is it fairly normal for this age group to be constantly exhausted?

What's her diet like? Can you reintroduce a nap? My ds gets very tired - he still needs naps most days at 3.6.

CoteDAzur · 29/05/2013 18:27

Anemia? Have you tried giving her iron supplements and see if that makes a difference?

No, it is not normal for a 3 year old to be so tired, especially starting first thing in the morning.

StitchAteMySleep · 29/05/2013 18:32

Could she be intolerant to other things in her diet? If she had long term exposure it could effect the villi in her gut and nutrient absorption. Deficiency in vitamins and minerals is a definite possibility. Does she take a multivitamin? If not I would introduce one as anaemia does exhibit the symptoms you describe. The GP can do a blood test.

Creature we diet isn't great. She doesn't like fruit (apparently) apart from pineapple and smoothies and she will knowingly eat raw carrots and cucumber all other veg would need to be hidden. She doesn 't eat a huge amount but normally has a distended tummy. She would definitely prefer to eat picnic food over a real meal! She really can't nap in the day as it has a huge impact on how much nighttime sleep she gets, we try to do quiet time when she is at home.
She does take a multivitamin (gummy bears from boots), maybe I should try and get her to take it in liquid form instead.
I have tried to book a dr's appt this morning and there aren't any for 2 weeks, I have also emailed her dietician to see if she has any suggestions.

I would book that doctor's appointment anyway. DS2 was always tired, quite uncoordinated, still napped until reception though - and turned out to have dyspraxia AND is really long-sighted with pebble thick lenses. Neither of these are a big deal but glasses and some changes to activities solved the tiredness almost over night!

He's still funny with food and I am thinking if following up on this now. Not suggesting any of this is what's up with your daughter but it has just made me more aware of some of the things that are worth following up.

Yes get vision checked. Also make sure she's drinking enough water, a big drink first thing in the morning. Sunken eyes and tiredness both signs of dehydration.

mrsXsweet · 31/05/2013 15:09

She never stops drinking kiwi, she gets really grotty if she isn't allowed a drink when she demands it! She had an eye test when she was a baby and passed with flying colours but they did say it could deteriorate again at about 3 so I will get them checked again.
Thank you all for your thoughts it is really helpful.

A distended tummy could indicate intolerances as should be going down at this age? Do get her to the docs.

Another random one is diabetes - does she smell sweet?!

notapizzaeater · 31/05/2013 17:37

You said wheat intolerant, maybe coeliac ? Most coeliacs are iron deficient at diagonosis and only get better when totally gf. The distended tummy would have me banging on the doctors door.

DeWe · 31/05/2013 20:00

I would suggest coeliac testing too. Worth asking for that. I think there's a blood test they can do initially, isn't definitive, but if it comes up positive then they'll diagnose on that I think. Worth checking anyway because round here, if you're coeliac, you can get flour and other stuff on prescription. If you are wheat intolerant for any other reason you don't get it on prescription. Confused

But going by mine, that wouldn't be enough sleep for any of mine at 3yo. Dd1 slept 8:30-8:30 and had a 2-3 hour nap in the afternoon, Dd2 slept 8:00-8:30 with a nap perhaps every 2-3 days of about 40 minutes, and ds slept 7:00-8:00 with an hour nap most days, although could miss it without problems as long as it wasn't two days together.
