Toddler coughing for MONTHS

Wwyd? DH wants to me to take ds (2) to docs as he's had a cough for about two months now. Not serious, but enough to wake him up every now and then Hmm.

He's a nursery four days a week so bugs a plenty.

Wwyd?

Littlemilla, we've had the exact same thing. Ds got a cough at about 8/9 months and just hasn't shifted it (he's 16months). I've been to docs with him a few times as its worsened, his chest is always clear and they just say its a virus. It's very very frustrating. I took him last week about a rash that had randomly appeared and brought up his cough, again. This f

Doh posted to early! This doctor actually referred us to a paediatrician. She said she still suspected it was just back to back viruses but wanted to get a second opinion. To be honest I suspect its like they think and nothing more sinister. He's quite a snotty one and I think his cough will just be excess mucous etc she did mention childhood asthma but they're reluctant to diagnose before 3. We also discussed allergies but they're so varied and hard to pinpoint that it would be fruitless. Anyway. Just wanted you to know you aren't alone! Aside from his cough ds is generally very healthy. I get sick of family saying 'oh, still got his cough has he' like I'm choosing to ignore it!

3 of my children have this cough at the moment. Pretty sure it is just a virus thing. None of them are ill, just annoying.

SwishSwoshSwoosh · 01/06/2013 06:08

Glad you have been, you mustn't worry about getting things checked, it is what the doctors are there for, if the cough doesn't go then the doctor will refer you. Sorry for telling you off!

SwishSwoshSwoosh · 01/06/2013 06:11

Wallace - with the best will in the world, you don't know if your children have the same cough or not, because you don't know the cause of the OP's child's cough.

Wallace · 01/06/2013 08:57

You're right, badly worded :)

BoffinMum · 01/06/2013 08:59

I think asthma too.

Second coming - did you find your son had the cough in the day as well? My ds is worse at night but he does have it in the daytime too. I recently tried giving piriton at nightad it seemed to really help with his cough. Only thing is it makes him drowsy so don't want to give it in daytime. Are there other options? Is it ok to regularly give antihistamines?
(Sorry to slightly hijack op!)

NomDeClavier · 01/06/2013 11:51

DS had this too. Asthma.

brettgirl2 · 01/06/2013 18:04

So did mine, family history of asthma so diagnosed quickly. However I now don't think she has asthma tbh as no symptoms for 6 months Confused (she's 4). It's all very difficult to know and toddlers can have persistent coughs.

Neiffer · 01/06/2013 19:10

Is there a recognised 'thing' brettgirl that toddlers have persistent coughs? I'm really reluctant to let ds be diagnosed with asthma even if he has it, as was the gp. They can grow out of it and then its on their medical record for life. Gp said they would still treat it but probably not 'diagnose' it.
I just don't think there's anything wrong with ds, but then why would he have the cough?! Argh! Normally I'd rely on gut instinct a lot, but if he's had a cough this long if must be something?!

I don't know but I know a couple of others who have over this winter. One doctor started on about enlarged tonsils - I don't know. I'm just saying dd has a diagnosis but I don't think she has it, maybe I'm wrong, time will tell. Can't see how a note on a computer will damage her tho - when I thought she did have it was just relieved she was offered flu jab.

brettgirl2 · 01/06/2013 20:27

on balance I'd much rather she had a false diagnosis than actually had asthma! Confused

Neiffer · 01/06/2013 21:26

I know a couple of people that haven't been passed on medical reasons because of a childhood asthma diagnosis, husband included. Mainly in industry, but either way both of them had never suffered past 3/4 and never needed medicine etc for it. I think that's why I'm wary of him being diagnosed with it, and the gp brought up the same reasoning.

NomDeClavier · 01/06/2013 22:24

I was told childhood 'asthma' is often given as a diagnosis for a persistent viral infection which can cause triggering of the airways and triggers wheezing like asthma and shortness of breath which produces the night time cough. An inhaler will sort it because it treats the symptom but the underlying cause is different.

DS has allergic asthma as irritants like feathers, haydust and animal fur will set him off.

NomDeClavier · 01/06/2013 22:24

narrowing of the airways even.

mewkins · 01/06/2013 23:05

Asthma for us too. Steroid inhaler really helps. Could also be a post- nasal drip?

brettgirl2 · 02/06/2013 11:03

well I'm not going to lose sleep over it, dh has asthma and he always declares it for everything never been an issue. That persistent vital thing I hope is what she had. Everything crossed!!

I have no idea :/ the gp just made it sound like if they suspected it was asthma then they'd try to treat if without officially diagnosing it. Maybe its a personal issue she has or something?!
