Ds (3.11) can only write his name, should I be worried?

His pencil control isn't great. He has zero interest in drawing and writing beyond writing his own short name. I've just had a birthday card from my goddaughter who is only 7 months older and will be the same school year and she's written the whole thing beautifully! Ds's letters are still huge and hit and miss as to whether they're correctly formed. He is also left handed.

He knows the letters and can spell words out on the keypad using my iPad. He can also sound out short words to read. Think maths is ok, adds and subtracts no problem to 10 using his fingers.

But he just won't or can't write! Or draw! Or use scissors actually... In general fine motor is ok, he can do things like threading and buttons but seems to be uninterested in learning the above skills.

I'm only concerned because of him starting school. If he had another year at home I wouldn't worry.

this thread is very reassuring. DS is 4 in August and sounds very like most of the boys described here. OP, we are focusing on the social / personal skills like toileting, dressing etc + he has some anxiety issues about routines which we are working on with nursery. He can recognise his name and the letters that make it up in other contexts but can't draw even the simplest shapes and shows no particular interest in doing so. They are very, very young and there is really no need for them to be doing any formal learning yet.

what tigers mummy said.

By chance, I found some old school books of mine last week, including my reception class writing book. On the first page, I clearly could not write at all - have just about managed to copy "dog" in massive, weak, letters. I would have been 4.9 at the time. By the end of the book, presumably about a year later, I have written a very short story in quite neat writing. Ended up at Oxbridge, if that makes you feel better!! (Didn't walk until I was 18 months, either, so hope for us all...(grin)

Why do you need to be able to write at 3? It's not a race.
