A child refusing to go after some months absent from the nursery?

This is a question from my friend, who hasn't got an account in the forum.

Her three-year-old child first attended the nursery last Sept and settled well.

However, due to the family circumstances, the family moved abroad for three months.

Now when the child came back to London, he seems to forget the joy of going to the same nursery. So for the last two days, he keeps crying. And the mother has to be with him all the time at the nursery, just like the first month last year.

What can she do?

Dump and run. Really. He'll be fine 5 mins after she's gone. The nursery staff should be helping. Has your friend talked to them?

Hi, my son went to the same nursery, so I got to know him. Last year, when he first came to the nursery, at first the staff there encouraged the mother to go away. But he keeps crying, so much that the teacher had to ask the mother to be back. It went on for about one month before the child settled and was happy to be alone with the teacher.

That's why this time the school asked the mother to stay again. But it would be stressful for everyone, including the school, if they have to do it all again for another month.

They should pick a tactic and stick to it.

To be fair the kid has had quite a bit of change so they need to settle him in gradually IMO. shorter sessions for the first week and make sure he's handed over to a key worker.
