Jeez gecko. Wind your neck in. This is an inappropriate thread for you to post your anti bottle-feeding vitriol in. Why don't you give some measured, constructive advice rather than the bordering on hysterical twaddle you have offered up? It's not am I being unreasonable.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 28/04/2013 15:48

Agreed dirty !!

op you didn't say how he was when he was just on BM. Did he screem alot then?

MrsHuxtable · 28/04/2013 17:45

Did you just stop breastfeeding him and only give him solids now?

Your baby will be hungry and in pain. You need to re-introduce milk. The amounts of solids they are meant to have at 6 months are tiny. It's still 90% milk they need.

Geckoandthemonkey · 28/04/2013 19:04

Dirty I think I gave perfectly sound advice. Sorry for being concerned about the baby's welfare. Jeez. I'm just giving my opinion, apologies if my advocacy for breastfeeding offends you, however there was more to my post than merely being pro Bf. I did also advise the op, if she is certain she doesn't want to Bf, she should make sure her baby is getting enough formula (&cuddles). I bet there are loads of mums, bfing or not, who would agree this baby needs more milk than he's getting.

Dirtymistress · 28/04/2013 20:43

If you bothered to read op's posts you would see that she gave him 25floz in 24 hours which is pretty much exactly the right amount. And that he is not her first child. Oh and by the way, try not to upset all those women unable to breastfeed for many perfectly good reasons, with your judgemental bullshit.

Geckoandthemonkey · 28/04/2013 20:55

Maybe her baby doesn't like the bottle & prefers breastfeeding?

Maybe the formula is upsetting baby's tummy, kidneys, etc?

Maybe you shouldn't resort to insults.

Maybe I shouldn't have to walk on eggs shells, after all bottle feeding Mums seem to be able to dish out any old inaccurate advice to me, who's Bf 2 babies beyond a year. (in RL & online).

OP, apologies if I came across as patronising, I was just concerned for baby. Perhaps get baby checked at GP for possible dehydration or cow's milk allergy.

stowsettler · 29/04/2013 10:56

FWIW as a FF mum (and a pretty thick-skinned one at that) I was quite offended by Gecko's post and the implication that I am giving my baby unpalateable, sub-standard nutrition (tell that to DD, she can't get enough of the stuff). I have my own, perfectly valid reasons for not BF and I'm not about to justify myself on here, but the OP may think she needs to. Agree with Dirtymistress that this is not the place for such posts.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 29/04/2013 11:28

It is entirely upto you whether you continue with the formula or go back to bfing or do a bit of both but think there are a few things to consider here. First have a read of Mn info on weaning its very good and the bit what about milk should be helpful too.

Also between 6 and 12 months the minimum recommended amount for a exclusively ff baby is 20 floz a day and this does not include cows milk used in cooking. Its first stage milk as well until 12 months. the nhs dont recommend follow on, goats or soy. Is he having his vitamins too?

When you give up bfing its advised to give up one feed a fortnight. This is to reduce your risk of mastitis and to allow Lo time to adjust to taking formula. Not telling you off, just think that maybe Lo hasn't had the time he needs. If he's not taking 20floz a day I'd talk to your HCP straightaway.

Also, bf babies take an ounce on average every hour. The night times sound like he is hungry and thirsty and possibly missing the comfort of bfing. If he's waking, taking an ounce and then waking an hour later, he's hungry. There are only 2 things you can do, keep on as you are, share the night feeds and wait until he's able to take more or start bfing at again.

If he has started solids is he meeting all the signs of readiness? Sone babies do before 6 months but if he's not it might be worth stopping the solids for now and concentrating on getting more milk into him during the day.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 29/04/2013 11:34

And you might want to ask MNHQ to move this to the breast and bottle section as it seems to be a feeding issue rather than a behavioural one Smile

PoppyAmex · 29/04/2013 13:17

This is hardly the place to discuss feeding ideologies.

Just forgot to say, OP - you mentioned you're using 10/15oz on your DC food per day, but considering he's only 6 months I'm guessing he doesn't actually eat everything so he's probably not getting enough milk.

Let us know how you're doing.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 29/04/2013 15:02

Yes please keep ousting sj

JiltedJohnsJulie · 29/04/2013 15:03

Posting Blush

Geckoandthemonkey · 29/04/2013 15:22

Hi OP, again I wasn't trying to patronize, only showing concern. Sorry.

Stowsetter, I wasn't trying to put guilt on FF mothers either. Only you can make yourself feel that way. It's like people thinking bfing is a freak show, I refuse to be made to feel a freak, I Bf with pride.

If formula isn't sub standard to breast milk, then what is it, as good as or better than it? It's lovely that your dd loves her bottle of milk, just as my 1 year old ds loves his boob. No mother needs to explain their feeding/parenting choices.

PoppyAmex · 29/04/2013 15:37

Gecko as far as I can see, on this thread no one canvassed opinions on breastfeeding politics and it's not appropriate or helpful.

I'm glad you BF "with pride" Hmm well done on performing a natural, physiological act - if you're in need of further validation, please feel free to come back and I'll be happy to applaud you for menstruating / eating / pooing etc.

I'm a BF mum, currently pregnant and planning to BF again, but this type of attitude seriously pisses me off!

Geckoandthemonkey · 29/04/2013 20:35

Poppy, I don't need anyone's validation, I only need to look at my dc's for that.

It's obvious the OP's baby is waking crying wondering where his boob is. I for one would not wean a baby who is clearly not ready to.

I feel having bf both dc's beyond 6 months, a year & I feel that qualifies me to impart some advice re infant behaviour/development/weaning.

Geckoandthemonkey · 29/04/2013 20:37

& I feel Blush

PoppyAmex · 29/04/2013 20:47

"I feel having bf both dc's beyond 6 months, a year & I feel that qualifies me to impart some advice re infant behaviour/development/weaning."

It qualifies you as much as any mother who raised her DC on FF.

hth

PoppyAmex · 29/04/2013 20:48

Anyway, I'm not going to argue with you about this - it's not your thread and it's not appropriate to discuss this.

OP, hope last night was better and your DC was more settled.

scratchandsniff · 29/04/2013 21:02

I'm on baby number one, but like you have recently stopped bf 6mo DS. started solids at 5mo, he currently has breakfast and tea at around 5pm. On the bottle front he has 5 7oz bottles and a 5oz bottle at about 3am. I was trying to resettle at this time and whilst he would go back to sleep he would wake several more times. Now I give a bottle he won't wake again until 7ish, so he must have been hungry. Some friends babies don't feed overnight but instead of comparing him and stressing about it I have decided every baby is different and hopefully he'll drop nighttime bottles when he's ready.

I suspect your DS is also hungry in the night.

Sheshelob · 29/04/2013 21:14

if you aren't ready to get back on the boob, you need to make sure you make milk the main thing.

How many oz of formula do you give him a day? There are guidelines you can look up.

I stopped bf our DS at 6.5 months (started on food at 4 months) and replaced each feed with a bottle. Whole process took about a month, as both of us needed time to adjust.

They need a certain amount of milk every day as until they are a year old, it is still their main form of nutrition. I think at 7 months he was on four bottles a day - before nap 1, before nap 2, before bed, in the night.

Sheshelob · 29/04/2013 21:30

Woah. In the time it took me to scrawl that a bun fight kicked off.

As someone who BF and FF my boy, this fight always bewilders me.

Clare123 · 29/04/2013 21:38

Can you have a chat with your hv about his milk and solids. I definitely feel you could do with some advice and she can talk you through what you want to and how to do it.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 29/04/2013 21:48

scratch you sound very sensible. Comparing in my opinion can make you very unhappy at times like that Smile
