Can a 2 year old be too fat?

My DD is absolutely beautiful and amazing and I feel bad even writing this but earlier today at soft play it was commented that she is 'so cute and pudgy' which I'd never really considered... But thinking about it she does have quite a large tummy and does mostly eat carbs as she is so fussy...

Do you monitor your child's food or is that absolutely ridiculous at this age?

She didn't walk until 23 months due to hypermobility and is still quite behind physically in terms of running, jumping and climbing, so her favourite activities are sitting ones like drawing and reading, playing with dolls.

I'm worried now that even asking this question makes me a horrible mum...

Of course 95th for weight for a child is fine and nothing to worry about. It means that 5 out of a 100 other kids are heavier than yours. Of course, yours may be tall. However, as an older child or adult I don't think being 95th for weight is great TBH, as so many people are overweight now. I wonder when the percentiles were fixed? I wouldn't mind being the 5th fattest out of a hundred in, say, 1950, but I would worry about being the 5th fattest out of a hundred in 2013 IYSWIM.

But suede you are completely forgetting about height. Being on the 95th centile for weight is perfectly fine if you are on a similar centile for height.

My nephew is 95th centile for weight but he is off the charts for height so is perfectly in proportion, bordering on underweight. DS is only on the 9th centile for height so if he was 95th for weight then he would be very overweight.

Yes Sirzy height is relevant I didn't forget - see I said "of course yours may be tall". Of course 95th for weight is fine if you are in proportion. How old is your nephew Sirzy? Every time i hear of someone very tall I think of Marfan syndrome. Worth considering for the very tall.......someone I knew of sadly died from undiagnosed heart problems arising......anyway, if you or anyone else read this and it prompts a query, it may save someone else.....

I have a tall slender 12 year old, but when she was in that just getting active stage she was a pudgy thing. I'd suspect that the OP's dd is at that stage still because of her mobility issues.

The only thing I'd watch out for is that she never gets a taste for more active pastimes because exercise is really key in long term healthy living. My two children eat a ton, but are generally very active, without that level of activity they would be overweight. I've noticed myself that changing my daily routine so it doesn't include regular exercise (in my case walking to the train station) has led to me carrying more weight.

The other issue is that it can be harder to enjoy physical exercise if you are overweight so you can get caught in a bit of a vicious circle.

OP can you encourage your dd in doing physical things, take her swimming perhaps or just lots of physical play at home?

You may have mentioned it but then you started going on as if being on the 95th centile is a bad thing and pretty much forgetting height.
