Worth it? I have a free class I can go to next week and wondered if it was worth while. Anybody got any strong views either way?

I've never actually been to a proper baby massage class but my ds loved to have his legs and feet rubbed after his bath.

I went once but it was in the morning, just when the baby had started a regular morning sleep! I quite enjoyed the one time and might have gone once or twice more but not ongoing for long. Also no other mums there the one time I went! The location wasn't that brilliant either

My HV invited me to the first just after baby and I came home. With stitches I wasn't up for much, but went. My dd loved it, not that she paid me any attention but was very nosy. At the end of the sessions she smelt lovely and slept peacefully. She has one more month left since they only go until 9 months. It gets a bit difficult trying to massage a baby that keeps crawling away.

I enjoyed the sessions as I got to meet and interact with new mums. It is nice to see other babies the same age as mine, yet all very individual. Also, dd gets weighed whenever she attends and they ask if you have any concerns about her progress. We normally get anywhere between 12 -19 babies at a session. I would recommend it.

yes, do go, I enjoyed meeting other mothers and ds enjoyed seeing other babies. v. useful in those first few weeks which can be quite isolating. also quite calming for him and helpful when he got a bit windy between 4 and 8 weeks.

Yes, I think it's great. I took my DD along until she was just over a year old, and she loved it! It helped to learn how to help ease colic and wind with massage, and the oil was great on her skin if she ever developed rashes. She was really stimulated directly afterwards, but would then sleep for ages, later on . It was brilliant socially too, I met a couple of friends there who I'm still in touch with, and my DD is friends with their children too.

There are midwives being trained to do baby massage in the neonatal unit because of the good results. It sounds worth it to me

I'll be taking my 20 month old ds to baby massage class next month, as he has eczma I'll be learning the best ways to massage his moisturisers in, I'm realy looking forward to it.

I did a sample session as I didn't think that ds would sit still long enough but he loved it...... beats the usuall fight we have to moisturise twice daily!

Also we had a brief talk on moving constipation using massage and was suprised to learn that you should only massage a baby or adult tummy in one direction, hope to pick up more home help remedies whilst I'm there.

All I'd say is give it a go you may well find that you enjoy it more than you thought you would, I certainly did and it has helped with his moisturising sessions, there are rhymes that you can say whilst massaging and ds loves all that.

I should also add they have different oils (Grapeseed, lavender, tangerine, sandalwood, camomile I can remember) you can use for different remedies and baby aches.

I think someone should go at least 3 times before you scratch it off the list.

On the Wednesdays for baby massage, dd tended to want to fall asleep. Letting her sleep just half an hour than normal on this particular day can make the difference between her being awake and able to attend or being grumpy because she wants to sleep.

During the session the HV stress the importance of talking only to your baby, which does work for some, not mine though.

Have you gone yet squirmyworm?

How did it go? We only have one month left?

squirmyworm · 03/02/2004 00:01

nope not yet GenT...our first session is next tuesday - really looking forward to it - particularly since I tried a little trial run on ds's feet and he curled and uncurled his toes and smiled!
