Just been to the health visitor. She kept asking about ds's speech and seemed a bit concerned that he doesn't string words together yet, she's going to get me to come in again in a month or two and see if he has improved. Should I worry?

I wouldn't have thought so..was that her only concern? I think it's well within the normal range not to at this age..my ds didn't say anything at all at just two

She said he was fine. very happy, confident and seemed interested in everything. He obviously understands everything that's said to him and says a lot of single words but she thought he should be speaking in short sentences by now.

Is she very young?

ds didn't really speak until nearly three and then went straight to sentences..dgs (my grandson) was 2 at the end of april and his speech is just starting to include one or two word phrases that he has heard like all gone and other room but mostly he jabbers incomprehensibly. He is collecting a fair number of single words. Definitely nothing you would call a phrase or snetnece

When my 2 yr old had his check at 23 months he was just saying individual words, 2 months later his speech improved dramatically and now he speaks in (almost) proper sentences (27 months)

I definitely wouldnt worry - my DS didnt say much (that made sense)until after he turned 2. He is now 2y 9mo and can talk in full sentences and sing songs. Smile

I wouldn't worry, ds is almost in 2 weeks and does say alot, BUT a good few of his friends say no more than 10 words and def not stringing them together.

My DS3 will be two in August and only has 2 or 3 words.

I think that if your DS has lots of single words and he uses them to communicate with you, e.g. to ask for things, or to draw your attention to them, then that is fine and the rest will come.

Marina · 12/05/2006 12:06

Dd was very much on single words only at two and other posters show that this sentences by two lark is really not representative of many toddlers.
She is three in August and has not piped down AT ALL for the past six months Shock
I think the surge in language development is huge when it happens later. We have ds as a comparator, who was talking before he could walk, spoke his first sentence at 15 months, but it was all gradual with him.
Dd just exploded verbally at about 27 months.

MrsBigD · 12/05/2006 12:23

ds is 20 months and doesn't utter any intelligible words besides mama and NO (accompanied by very avid head shaking Grin.

He does babble an awful lot though and doesn't shut up so I'm certain he things he's talking LOL

Wouldn't worry just yet. DD (now 4.5 with verbal diarrhoea) was a very late talker as well and didn't actually start stringing 'proper' sentences together until she started in nursery

izzybiz · 12/05/2006 15:34

my Ds was talking in sentences by 2, but my Dd, who is 2 on sunday isnt.
she can say hundreds of words now, and has just started putting two together.
i wouldnt worry about it. (easier said, i know!)

flowerfairy · 13/05/2006 09:40

Ds now 26 months and has several single words, will only occasionally copy what has been said or does say it once and never again. I keep trying to contact hv but having now joy at present as I am concerned about his lack of speech. But do know he understands everything that is said to him. Besides how do you give speech therapy to a child who won't repeat anything? Or do I not understand speech therapy enough?
