Help! My 7 month ds appears to be teething. He went to bed as normal at 7pm but woke up again an hour later and was crying so much, I got him up again. Kept him up for a while (he was perfectly happy downstairs, although I didn't play with him in case he thought it was playtime) but once put back to bed he has been crying and crying. Have given calpol but this doesn't seem to have helped. What else could I / should I do??

Ashton and Parsons Infants' Powders
Teething powder, comes in a box of little paper wraps, just dip your wet finger in it and then rub and I mean rub it in to his gum. Nelsons do a homeopathic one if you prefer. And then let him gnaw himself silly on your knuckle, seriously they seem to prefer mum's knuckles to anything else.
Oh and if it gets really bad, like the tooth is piercing the gum, try bonjela

Have you tried one of those plastic rings filled with water that you keep in the fridge? They are nice and cool to chew on. What about teething gel? I think it offers some relief.

My dd had nights like this (apart from the going to bed at 7 bit, lucky you!) and, if it's any consolation, they seemed to last for a few night and then she'd be fine again.

Horrible seeing them in pain though, isn't it? Good luck.

I gave him some bonjela earlier - he seemed to like me rubbing it in. Hubby has just run up with the teething ring! When I go up he starts chuckling - is this normal? I was thinking that if he was in pain then he would be miserable all the time. (Can you tell I'm a first time mum????!!!)

Just in case anyone has read my other threads about my 7 year old - he is my step-son, so although have experience of parenting, this is my first baba!

I've found Medised good for bedtime, it's paracetamol combined with an antihistamine and it seems to help them sleep. Also Anbesol (think it's spelt like that) gel worked better than Bonjela

Another idea, the nurofen for babies is good and I think you can use from 6 months onwards. I have sometimes used that every 4 hours and Calpol every four hours, staggering it so that I gave something every two hours, just for really bad days.

Also, dd used to have the worst pain in the days before the tooth came when there wasn't muich to see, then when it was there she seemed fine.

I would be reluctant to blame everything on teething - people kept telling me that everything ds did was related to teething from about 4months on. He didn't actually get his first tooth until after his first birthday!

Payney are his cheeks bright red or flushed? Is his behaviour stranger than normal (seems like a dumb question eh). It is not colic? Have you rubbed his tummy?

If all else fails, give his gums a good rub and give him a cuddle. When he falls asleep you can put him back to bed.

Mine was like that 2 days ago, she has slept in the bed with us and slept fine. Last night she slept without her grobag and covers and was still rather hot. I just wish those peggies would come through as she is ready for steak and chips.

Her teething began from long ago, which makes sense, they are growing under the gums and piercing through. Would hurt anyone if you don't know what is happening? Although aloha, I don't think I can wait another 4 months for them to arrive, a bit too long.

Someone recently told me of a child whose parents didn't even know he had teeth. They only found out when he fell or something and gave a good wail, alas when the mouth opened they saw them at the back of the mouth. All this time they were checking the front. That is another perspective for you.

Have to say I'm with aloha here. My daughter was supposedly 'teething' from about 3 months and she didn't get an actual tooth until she was 11 months and then made no fuss whatsoever and I didn't know it was there til I felt in on my nipple while feeding her! I know it can make some babies cranky and I've noticed my dd gets a nappy rash and runny poo while teething but in my experience and talking to other moms it's only really cutting the big teeth like molars that can cause awful sleeplessness. I'd say your ds is at that 7 month mark of trying to avoid sleep. They all do it around then.

I can feel something sharp on his bottom gum (on the side). He's snuffly as well - the last two nights he has slept much better, although he has woken up (extremely upset and won't be left)at 10.30ish. Both times I have taken him out of bed - Sat night I held him till he went to sleep, last night, strict hubby insisted on putting him back to bed (he's worried that he'll get into the habit of being picked up and so won't go back to his routine). Ds cried and cried, but as soon as he was sat/picked up he was back to grinning again. Dh came to the conclusion that he was taking the p* -I came to the conclusion that he (for some reason - congestion?) didn't like being horizontal. As a result, I took him out of his grobag as he seemed hot, put something under his head so that he was slightly raised and hey presto! He gurgled for about 10 mins then went to sleep!

OUt of interest, can you get medised over the counter or is it prescription only?
My mother used to call it Father Christmas medicine, bringing it out on Christmas Eve when we were tiny and saying that it'd help Father Christmas come sooner! Pah - conned!

Pook · 26/01/2004 14:30

And I'm truly only asking out of interest - have no current plans to dope daughter, but you never know.......

lydialemon · 26/01/2004 14:33

You can get Medised over the counter.

BF used it on all her kids when they last flew! It was on the recommendation of her GP too.
