Toddler scratching his bum and lower back

17mo DS has started really scratching his bum cheeks and lower back red raw when he has his nappy of before bathtime or when he"s having a bit of bare bum time.

I've tried a bit of E45 after his bath in the event it was dry skin but this hasn't helped. I actually think he's enjoying the sensation!

Anyone else experienced this?

Yes. DD does this. She does now have patches of scaly skin on her legs and lower back which doc says is toddler eczema and treat with e45 or Vaseline if it gets really bad. So I'd stick with the e45 in case his gets worse too - it wasn't noticeable when she starte with the scratching a few months back. I notice it's under the waistband of the nappy so maybe sweat makes it worse. We thought it was bubble bath to begin with as she only did it in the bath but she kept at it when it was just water.

Thanks fifi, I'll keep with it.

It looks terrible - he really digs his nails in!

Speak to your pharmacist or GP about a cream that doesn't contain lanolin (e45 contains it) as it can make itchy skin more itchy!

my dd has eczema aswell and i found the aveeno cream the best its natural, made from oats apparently and its brilliant, and i tried several others before that, one recommended by the doctor and they were all crap

Has he been treated for threadworm?

my 2 year old son does this constantly and makes his back bleed quite often. His skin is very sensitive and dry. I generally find sudocream is best. I also aviod highly perfumed bath cream and bubble bath. when its really bad i take him to the GP and the doc prescribed a lotion called Aqueous (really dont know if thats spelt or pronouced correct) and that helped more.
