Whining!!!! Morning noon and night

Coping strategies?! Please I am utterly desperate. Dd1 had been a complete nightmare for weeks and I honestly don't know how to cope. She has started waking in night whining - she wakes up in morning whining (where previously she would run in smiling).- complete cheek and refusal to do anything she is told. I have tried nice approach - I have lost my cool more times than I can remember and I have tried ignoring and nothing works.in fact she getting worse - she is 3. Nothing is going on - no new siblings etc... I am fast reaching end of tether. It's not even 8 and I have already been pushed to my limits

Unfortunately most do through this phase. Mine certainly did. And I found 3/4 to be much worse than the so called terrible twos.

The whining is like Chinese water torture isn't it?

I found that I short, sharp answer then ignoring the whining (or at least look like you're ignoring) worked quicker than getting into a discussion about whatever they were whining about.

Ha, I knew you were going to say you had a 3 year old! Awful, isn't it? I can't offer advice at the moment. I'm in the midst of it myself and am utterly exhausted with a non sleeping 8 month old too. We've all been ill, which hasn't helped, and DD's recovery seems to involve whining to new heights and epic tantrums.

Hoping you get some good advice on here.

It certainly is like water torture - it is absolutely unbearable. I also have a 7 month old who is going through a non sleeping phase as well and so I tired as well. I ignore the whining and it then descends into a spectacular screaming tantrum then everyone is shouting and it honestly makes me want to weep for dd2 who must wander what the hell she was born into! I don't want to be a shouty mummy but that's what I have become. I have even tried spending more one in one time with her to see if that will help but no. She is literally waking up to twice a night to whine "mummmmmmmy" until I go on and there is nothing wrong with her. Arghhhhhhh

Sounds so similar, steben. I felt like we'd got past the worse sibling rivalry sort of stage really well, as dd was so happy with DS as a newborn. Now it's the constant whining, clinging, wailing, stomping, door slamming, threatening (!), screaming, shouting.

Like you, I'm not a 'shouty mummy', but really have found it hard during this phase to not be. She doesn't give me any opportunity to be nice! Even trips out, playing with her, following her lead etc just end up the same.

Judy it is reassuring to know I am not alone! We had a bad time when dd2 was about 2 weeks but thought we were through the worst of it. And the night waking!!! Torture. Plus like you say it is not good going out because I am on pins waiting for her to kick off. I keep repeating the "this too will pass" mantra but it wants to pass soon otherwise I may commit myself!

We're going to a Playcafe this morning. I can pretend she's not mine! Yesterday she managed an hour of screaming while walking the dog. Dog didn't care, baby was asleep, nobody could hear!

It's incessant though! Good luck for today.

With the night waking I would get dp to go in. Although she wants reassurance from you and maybe a cuddle, she may not wake if dp goes in.

We did this with our eldest as it was killing me getting up to two babies/toddlers in te night ad the eldest kicked off at first but after about 3/4 nights stopped waking.

steben · 12/03/2013 12:40

That's a good idea mountain - dp will have to do it because its literally breaking me!!! Will give that a go and hope it does the trick. I would ignore her but feel you have to go in because what of she was in genuine need?! Plus an worried about her waking dd2!
