Talking about themselves in the 3rd person

Just out of curiosity really, my 2.3 year old DD always refers to herself in the 3rd person, i.e. X wants snack, X is going to the park. At what age is it normal for her to start saying "I" did something rather than using her name, she's my only child and I've not been around toddlers a lot before.

I think it's fairly normal. My experience is that if they have a name that's hard to say then they tend to use "I" and "me" a lot more. Though fairly interchangeably. As is "Me want biscuit" or "Give it to I".
Dd1 and ds both used I and me because their names are hard to say. Dd2 said "Dd2 do this" because hers is easy. I think she changed to I and me some time round about 2yo, but she was a big chatterbox.

I did know a child that had "you" and "me" mixed up. Because her dm said "you" when she meant the dc. So the dc used to say "you do this" and "you want that" which was very confusing. If she said "me do this" she wanted you to do it!

DD still refers to herself in the 3rd person at nearly 4, but I have started correcting her because it's just a habit rather than a lack of understanding and obviously at some point they do have to switch. It's hard because every now and then I realise I've been doing it too "Mummy'll do that" or whatever.

I would not worry. She's only 2 and as long as she's hitting other milestones it's fine.

I know kids of similar age who can't seem to ask for anything yet never mind refer to "I" or "me".

My DD is two in a few days, she calls herself "you" the whole time, and occasionally by her name. It's not really surprising is it? I am sure you spend a lot of time saying "mummy has to do this" or "do you want mummy to help" :)

3.6 DD still does this. Always calls herself by her first name or 'you' - as in 'you want to have a biscuit' - and if refering to something that is mine, she'll say 'that's my (meaning mummy's) bed' and this is 'your' bed (meaning hers)! very confusing Smile.

Thanks everyone, good to know it's normal.

My 2.4yo is just starting to refer to herself in the 1st person but often gets confused. The other week someone asked what her name is and she said "I'm called Me" Grin Genius!
