Any ideas on how to get 5yo dd to drink more?

I've got a new theory that says that the reason she's not dry overnight yet is that she doesn't drink enough, therefore her bladder's not very strong.

But how can I get her to drink more? Unless it's fruit shoots or fizzy pop, she's just not interested. And yes, I've tried other drinks in a fruit shoot bottle to con her - she sussed it straight away Grin

All help appreciated! Thanks.

ice lollies? or let her make some juice up for herself to drink? I know my kids like to be all grown up and make their own drinks, but they know if they don't drink it, they can't make another one.

My girls always enjoy using straws to drink through, when they are ill I always find a straw keeps them drinking

Thanks both of you. Smile

a straw is best for the sugary drinks as then the drink doesn't stay in contact with their teeth as long.
how about a special cup? maybe she could pick it out at the shop as well

Have no idea how a 5yo thinks (only have a 3yo & 6mo) but can you ban the ones she likes and just introduce water for a week? Or, as in our household, it's a cup of squash at lunch and dinner and once that's gone it's water the rest of the time. Oh and a glass of juice at breakfast after he's drunk all his milk. That's a thought, what about bribery, if you drink this glass of water you can then have your fruit shoot?

or as my mum says - it's not bribery, it's reward on result ! :o

jelly is mostly water...but not a long term solution really :)

I have tried this with ds1 for the same reason - left to his own devices he'd drink about 2 cups a day....
I have been using a star chart - he gets a star for drinking 5 cups a day without a fuss. basically I just insist that he has to finish a whole cup at each mealtime and then at morning and afternoon snack. At mealtimes he has water and otherwise he has diluted juice or milk. He is generally fairly happy to please, so as long as I am firm and consistent (and remember to check!) we don't have too much conflict over it - he knows it is one of the rules.

I agree that straws make it more fun, and I've been told that sports bottles with pullout tops can also be very popular - you could try just giving her one to sip at freely during the day. You could get a special straw that she can use if she's drinking without a fuss. Personally I woudl also stop fizzy or sugary drinks (or make a very clear rule, like she can have one after every three cups of water or juice) because while they are a possibility she's goign to kick up a fuss to try and get them.

Thanks everyone for the ideas. I'll have to give it a try Smile
