14 month old not walking- Just had a scary visit to the paediatrician. Any advice?!

We just got back from paediatrician at hospital. We are under them because of DS2's milk intolerance anyway so this was just a check up to see how he was doing and how his growth is on dairy free diet etc. Basically all fine. Anyway at one of the previous appointments when DS2 was 10 months old I mentioned I was concerned as he wasn't crawling yet but the doctor didn't seem too concerned as he was still very young and was rolling, sitting etc.

At his 12 month check up I said he STILL wasn't crawling though had learned to just roll everywhere. We were refered for an xray of his legs and pelvis to make sure there were no problems with joints and all came back fine.

Today had his 14 month check up and I mentioned he was still roling every where, not crawling properly (just sort of drags himself along like commando crawling but still prefers to roll). He's not pulling up and although he can weight bare, he is very wobbly so no where near walking.

Suddenly now the doctor seems to have sprung into action and referred us for physiotherapy which is a good thing but he has also said that DS has to go for a blood test to rule out some syndrome or other but wouldn't really go into specifics becasue it was unlikely and he'll discuss it with us if needed. Hmm Anyway, he then started talking about brain scans and other scary things and I have no idea now if there's a problem or what it is. I am so worried about DS2 and deep down since he was born I have known there is something'not quite right' with him but I can't really put my finger on it. He is lovely one minute, whinging and crying the next. Never really seems fully settled or happy. Never been a content baby but then neither was DS1 and he's fine now so it could be nothing. I have no idea. Just all this talk of brain scans has got me worried as to what they could be looking for.

Anyone got any experience of a non walking 14 month old? I know 14 months for walking isn't actually delayed but it's the lack of crawling and pulling up or even lack of bum shuffling which seems to worry me and the doctor more. Any ideas on what I can do to assist him in being better on his legs?

My DS walked at fourteen months, my DD is seventeen months now and not walking yet. It hadn't even occurred to me to be worried about it. Maybe I should be?

My dd2 walked at 21 months, and didn't crawl til 13 months (with one leg under her, not proper crawling...). She was at least 16 months when she first pulled herself to standing. But she is now 4.4 and you'd never know. She's not the most physically adept of her peers, but she's not the least either!

I realised when she was about 12 months that she had a large head, a long body and tiny short legs, no wonder she couldn't balance, let alone walk. But lucky for me she wasn't bothered.

Don't panic! (Oh and she wasn't the best talker either, so that's a myth too, but again she's catching up. But she did get her first tooth at 17 weeks - small victories!)

ds did not walk until 20 months and even then he could only manage 2 steps. He did not see physio until he was over two year old. Ds had physio and wore orthoric inserts until he was 3 and half years old.

You would never know he had a problem at eleven.

dd walked at 14 months and she has never had any developmental problems.

From paediatrician saying he would refer dd to physio and getting to our first physio appt took about 3 months. This might have been slower as Xmas and New Year occurred not long after paediatrician appt! Those holidays definitely affected how long the reports took to be typed and posted!

Ahhh now that is ringing bells Wigeon. He is very bendy, not particularly his legs that I've noticed though I will look out of it more now. He often does wha you say and bend right forwards laying his cheek on the floor with his legs still out in the sitting position. It didn't know if this was just poor muscle tone in his core though as he was quite late to sit up (9 months without toppling). I don't know really, is definitely worth looking in to though, thank you.

Hello.... I know this thread is very old but I’ve stumbled across it now as I was trying to get some information on my daughter. She’s 14m and is nowhere near crawling or walking, she rolls on the floor everywhere all across the room. What was the update on this thread? It’s been 6-7years where is your child at now in terms of physical development? I’m so worried I get on google and come across all sorts and it really upsets me. Please someone help me
Thanks

Sabu, if you have concerns ask your GP to refer to a paediatric doctor. I don’t think the health professionals are concerned about the non walking but the non crawling or the non pulling they may investigate. Trust your instincts and it will give you peace of mind to get your DD checked out.

Sabu1234 · 13/11/2020 19:45

Hello @pilates, thanks for your reply. I’ve taken my DD to a private paediatric and she’s been diagnosed with global development delay. Wev now been asked to get her eye sight tested also some blood tests which we are heading towards. I’m really struggling to sleep, I can’t help but worry and it’s really killing me

pilates · 13/11/2020 19:49

Oh Sabu it must be a very stressful worrying time for you. How is her speech and fine motor skills?

Sabu1234 · 13/11/2020 20:03

@pilates she has no words she bubbles, she can pick toys up and holds them she plays with certain toys. She doesn’t self feed. She’s able to now sit properly without falling back. She started rolling over at 10m and sitting at 11m. Everything is delayed .... I have three older children and they haven’t had any development delays. Very worrying.

pilates · 13/11/2020 20:21

It must be hard as you have other children and know roughly what to expect.

Sabu1234 · 13/11/2020 20:28

Exactly it’s hard as I know they hit all their milestones at the right time ...
