How many words can your 18 month old say?

Trying to get an idea of what's 'average'
Have dr appointment tomorrow to ask about dd possibly having enlarged adenoids (ooh doctor suggested we look into it as dd gets frequent infections and this could be a cause)
One sign of it is poor hearing (possible) and behind in talking
Dd has 15 meaningful words (that I understand and that she says off her own back rather than just repeating a sound)
Does that sound average?

My 19 month old twins have 5-10 words each, though twins are often a bit speech delayed.

I agree with marmoset that the poster is a bit misleading. If a child is already expected to use 50 different words by 2, then 300 word by 3 seems a particularly unambitious target by comparison.

OP, DS didn't have many words at all by 18 months, probably 10 - 15 at most, but it started to increase after that and he really took off between 21 and 23 months.

I think average is about 12 words.
Mine were below average and had 0-3 words at 18m. 3 turned out to have mild speech delay (not difficult to correct).
Remember that gestures (like pointing, waving) and animal sounds used deliberately to indicate the animal itself (woof!) count as words, too.

He sounds within normal range, but always always check hearing professionally if you have any concerns at all - even quite large hearing loss is surprisingly easy to miss.

poodletip · 01/03/2013 11:53

my 19m old only has about 5 words. My eldest was similar up to 20 months but by the time she was 2 was talking in sentences quite happily so I'm hoping this one will be the same. Middle was more typical in that he started talking earlier but progressed at a more steady pace.

I wouldn't worry about that level of speech if there's a good level of understanding, she can make a good range of the sounds needed to say words, and no other concerns. If there's other cause for concern then it's worth mentioning I think.

DS1 at 16 months had 'juice' 'yes' 'no' 'mumma' 'dadda'....by 19 months was absolutely speaking in sentences. It just came all of a sudden so I wouldn't worry. Like someone else said that range within normal limits is HUGE! DS2 is 14 months and says nothing meaningful but an odd gutteral barking noise when he sees a dog and 'barrr' for ball. That's it!

IcouldstillbeJoseph · 01/03/2013 13:12

My DS was almost completely deaf at 18 mo through glue ear (which he had from birth). He was mute.

MortifiedAdams · 01/03/2013 13:13

Dd is 14 months. She started talking very early ( but is a lazy so and so where walking is concerned). She can say...
Mouse Cat Dog Frog Horse
Mama Daddy Nanna
Names of various friends
Toast Breakfast (nearly fell of my chair at that!) Yoghurt Apple Milk Water
Up Down More All gone Help
Hiya Hello By Bye Night night Ta Thank you PLease
Who's that? What's that?
Shoes Book Ball Car

Doing animal sounds counts too.

Comprehension is more.important though - can he point to body oarts when you ask?

Belmo · 01/03/2013 15:48

Shock I would have said about 200 but just done that link and it's well over 300. She'll be 18 months next week.
Friend's baby only has 2 words but is much better at physical stuff. It'll all even out by the time they're 3 I'm sure.

LiegeAndLief · 01/03/2013 18:03

Ds had one.

Dd had about 200.

They both talk incessantly now!

Cakecrumbsinmybra · 01/03/2013 18:55

DS1 had well over 50 words at 16 months, and I know because we wrote them down (pfb). DS2 is 2.4 now and chatting away, but he only really started talking from about 2. At 18 months he was still making that kind of eeh noise that they all make for every single thing they want. Except he did it for about a year and drove me insane.

hubbahubster · 02/03/2013 14:28

DS is 19 months and I guess has about 50 words. He's not talking in sentences though.

cakesonatrain · 02/03/2013 17:13

DS is 19mo. He can say
Hiya, an approximate Mamma and Dadda, More, No, There, In there, That, something akin to Bubble, All gone, Oh-oh,Wow, and growls for various growly animals.

I think that's the first time I've counted over ten.

mysweetie · 03/03/2013 11:12

DD is 22mos now and just have few word unclear but I'm not being too worried kids have different stages. The important part is she can understand things around her, respond correctly, memory is sharp and communicating(just not clear yet :) ).

Our little girl is nearly 18 months and says 100 words.
And learning new ones everyday.
About 11 would be unrecognisable to others but we understand what she is saying.
She has had a few times she said something clearly after we said it but then never says it again.
She understands many more words but has not vocalised yet.
From what i have read between 5 and 50 is average at 18 months.
If they surpass 100 at 18 months they are classed as gifted.

I read on one forum that a pediatrician said 100 words is average for 18 months.
I think she may have misunderstood her pedestrian.
From the 18 months children i have met i have never known them to reach 100 words.

I like to stick with what i read that mynchild maybe gifted Grin
