14month old suddenly rejecting some foods

My 14 month old DS has always been a good eater with just the odd blip during fussy phases. For the last few days his reaction to foods has really started to worry me. If I feed him something with big lumps in he will often spit it out and maybe even gag. If he tries to feed himself the same food it often won't make it past his lips.

He has been on a diet of finger foods for lunch and a mix of spoon fed and finger veg for dinner for many months now. He never appeared to have a problem with textures until now and was quite an easy baby to wean. I'm pretty convinced its texture related as he is spitting out some of his favourite foods. The confusing thing is sometimes at a meal he will reject it initially, then eat some happily, then start rejecting it again. Some meals he will feed himself no problem and others, like dinner last night, we can barely get any food in him at all.

Not sure what to make of this and wondered if anyone has thoughts or experiences to share? Thanks.

Could he be teething? Things always go a little awry when DS is.

My DD, almost 16 months began doing it around 13th months, she just rejected food she loved one day and eating it on the next day. I think it is to do with independens, trying to have it her way. Do not make my mistake to offer alternatives and more snaks, as they became fussy :(. Now she has days when she eats and days when she is starving herself. I am trying at the moment to ignore her and she eats only when she wants. Not a good eater now unfortunately. So, just ignore him, he will eat more at next meal.
