My two year old sleeps at ten at night!

Hi, I am starting to despair.Have a two year old who would not fall alseep before 9:30-10pm!
Our bedtime routine had worked perfectly well till some months ago.It used to be heaven, 8pm he was Asleep. The change coincided with him taking the brown inaler (steroids) in quite high doses for his wheezing, but I cannot see a straight relation from what I have read. We have tried it all apart for leaving him to "cry it out", always fearful that he might develop a big cough and start wheezing again.
He has been settled now so I would really like to "train" him, but fear it might be too late....any tips?
I am a full time working mother with another Ds on the way ( Due May 17th ) and have to try to manage this or I will not cope for sure. It is frustrating to say the least, specially when his bedtime routine lasts more than an hour.
Thanks for sharing!Any advise welcomed....

what time does he get up in the morning? You may have to wake him earlier in order to get him tired enough to go to bed earlier. Does he still nap? You may need to look at making it shorter/earlier to get him to bed earlier

Ds has been on max doses of brown inhaler - never noticed a correlation.

I would try waking him at 730 at latest and at most having 40 minute nap (if he usually has one) then I'd start the bedtime routine at 645. Try and change something like maybe his bedroom furniture around so its all new and he doesn't associate it with negative connotations from previous bedtime.

Have low level lighting, stories and bed.

Good luck!

Personally I'd sit with him if he needed me to but no interaction and then gradually edge further towards door once he'd got used to that.

Fwiw dd is 2 and sleeps 7-5/6 and has a nap at 1130ish. She's up v early though as you can see! I wish I could work out how to fix that!

If he doesn't nap at lunchtime he may be getting very overtired, or it may also affect his evening sleep if it's too late (ie if he's still asleep after 2.30). It's worth trying 5pm supper and simply an earlier bedtime - try moving his whole day forward. At this age he should be having 12 hours, so I wouldn't drop a lunchtime nap yet if he's not getting much sleep at night.

My 19 month ds rarely sleeps before 10, sometimes later! I've tried allsorts and now officially given up. He now goes to bed when he asks, whatever time that may be, and he goes straight to sleep. I could no longer see the point of an hour long battle when he clearly was not ready for bed. Some people are just night owls, his dad was similar as a child according to his mum. I've long stopped stressing about it and try to see the positives that when everyone else's kids are up at the crack of dawn every day, my boy is still asleep at 9.30!! :)

Thank you very much for ll you advises and replies.I just tried putting him to bed at 8, after countless trips to his bedroom he dozed off at 930 (which feels like good compared to 10:30 Last night)....
Bea he has been on 400 daily of Beclomethasone Qvar for two months and we need to keep him for two more months, I have read there should be no relation but it is just that one tries to find explanations I guess.
Ilove he wakes up at 7:30 which is nice, he naps once for an hour to two hours. we have tried moving his nap around, shortenning it and even leaving him without one but the consequences where that he would just not settle at night.
I will try tomorrow putting him to bed at 730, wish me luck:)
Jackey I am starting to take that approach and just think it is a phase that will pass and relax, eitherwise I am starting to loose it.
