I would like to teach my dd signing for hearing children. I have done a search on here for makaton etc , but confused as to which one is the easiest to master, as many different ones are spoken of. So far I have been starting to talk to her using some signing but I am not sure were I got them from??MILK eg. is like u r milking a cows udder with your hand??? I got it from a link on another thread some time ago. She is only 17 weeks old and I am aware that I may not get any response till 6-9months old, but it wont hurt to start??? I would like to find a group doing this , but there doesnt seem to be one near me in North London.

melsy · 16/01/2004 20:24

AAAHH American V British . So is the one on the site I linked ASL ?? shame if so , as it is brilliant to have it shown like that online. Far easier than diagrams in a book.

I can't tell from a quick scan of that Sing and Sign website which system they actually use. IMHO, there's no point in using something based on ASL (American Sign Language) if you're in the UK. Personally I would advise using good ol' Makaton because if, god forbbid, your child needs any extra help with speech or communication you will find that most UK speech therapists will use Makaton. Also this is the system most teachers are familiar with and there is now a movement to teach Makaton to "typically communicating" children in state schools kind of as a second language and as part of the whole Inclusion strategy.

popsycal · 16/01/2004 21:58

good advice form davros

melsy · 16/01/2004 21:59

Davros is Sing & sign Makaton?? Or the link I attached at 7:00???
