Non stop eating 2 year old

OK, I know this may sound like a silly thing, however my 2 year old DD, has started eating non stop. She will eat her meals, and then have seconds, and thirds. She asks for food, as soon as the table clears and continues to do so. Not any particular food, all kinds.

She has always been a good eater, only turning up her nose at fatty meats. She was a hungry baby, and does tend to eat more when she is having a growing spirt, but this is more then that.

Nursery, told us today that they have had to discourage her from self serving from the food table, as she does not stop. I initally thought, it was a portion issue, but clearly not.

Anyone have any ideas as to why the non stop eating?

Three things come to mind.

Toddlers are growing and developing, as long as it's a balanced diet ie not all sweet and sugary she maybe just eats a lot then burns it off. How is she on size charts, is it worth asking at your doctor's or health clinic if you are concerned?

Does she eat out of habit of grazing when actually her body's letting her know she's thirsty?

Encouraging her to have a healthy appetite is one thing, do you praise her when she empties her plate at mealtime? Does she finish every last bite or just want variety?

Just thought of one more.
Please don't be offended by this, it's not meant as a slur, is it possible she could have picked up thread worms at nursery? They particularly thrive on an intake of sugary or yeasty food.

She has always been on the tall side (98th percentile) on most charts, and continues to be so. Desperate through she is for anything not allowed, she has few artificial sugary stuff - no sweets, fizzy drinks or coke. Any juice is watered down, but she is not even asking for juice particularly much.

When she moved to solids, getting her to drink water was a nightmare. However, she is constantly drinking and drinks with meals and when eating.

She eats everything on her plate and hands it to me for 'more'. We say, "well done", when she empties her plate at meal times, but never really thought to do so for snacks.

I hadn?t thought about thread worms. She is the only one at nursery who is acting in this kind of way though.
Thanks for the advice. I have made an appointment for her with the doctor anyway and will probably mention this.

Perhaps one thing you could do you is to stop praising her for finishing her plate.

That's tough I worry about this with my DD as she love food (like her mum) and has a bug appetite. I'm resolved to offer extra fruit and veg after the main meal if she's had sufficient protein etc.

Sorry huge, not bug...autocorrect...

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 01/02/2013 21:51

Yy I meant hold back on praising when she clears her plate, sorry. I'm not sure when toddlers grasp about being 'full' but if she has a decent portion to begin with that should cut out the need for extra servings.

At nursery she self serves, and apparently she is quite heavy handed with her servings. I thought I was given her enough, but even if I wasn't three or four times going back so it equals 2 adult potions is still a bit much.

Thread worms don't cause over-eating. Tape worms do. You had better take her to the doctor I think, there are many causes of over eating and she may need tests.
