Freaks out at nappy change!

Not the most thrilling subject in the world but would appreciate any advice :)

My ds is 10.5 months and a right happy little chap, although always been a bit farty etc. He's been rolling since 5-6 months and crawled/pulled up at 8. A very active baby.

Everything is rosy except that I have come to dread changing his nappy, and not just because of the god awful stink.

As soon as I put him down to change he arches back and screams (proper screaming not just a whinge). Tries to roll and crawl off smearing poop all over the place.
Have tried singing, playing, giving a toy, ignoring, being firm - nothing works.
Any words of wisdom would be lovely!

give him an old lipstick to play with
worked with my ds when he played up
and then my sil 2used the same trick with her ds andf it worked too.
the like the lid on off thing

will he stand up? I would just do it standing up - it's tricky wiping the poo but so much easier than having them screaming and thrashing

Yep I've got one of these- nothing you can do.

Ds1- would lie still for every nappy change smiling at the ceiling.

DS2 would wriggle a bit then lie happily if I gave him something to play with.

ds3 (now 15 months), screams arches his back, flips over crawls/runs off, flings himself back. I've decided to potty train him early :o Seriously having had 3 very different boys my view is if they're like this there's bugger all you can do except chase after them mopping up poo on the move.

Pleased to hear I'm not alone.

Oh I put him in pull ups really early as they're easier to get on.

was just about to suggest the same as foxinsocks, doing it standing became the only way to manage changing ds nappy in the end, it's a bit tricky getting the nappy done up at first but you soon get the hang of it... i also found giving him his own nappy to play with helped too!!

mcnoodle · 25/04/2006 10:17

Thanks all - he does love a bit of make-up! Keep giving him new and exciting pampering products to try and keep him distracted. Doesn't always work though.

Foxinsocks - do try and do it standing up if I can't face the battle, but the feisty so and so just shuts and tenses his legs, which is hilarious, but makes getting nappy on almost impossible.

Jimjam - am also glad to hear I'm not alone. What age did you start with the pull ups? Do they keep the 'business' contained as well as nappies? Have also threatened ds with early potty training!

hi mcnoodle we started using pull us for our dd when she was about 10 months as she found out that she could get her nappy off. they are just as good as regular nappies with tabs and they are a lot easier to put on and take off if the los are fighting.

my ds is also 10.5 months, and for a month or so now we've been sticking him on the potty every time we change his nappy. he seems to have got the hang of it, and now we catch almost all his poos in the potty. (wasn't really done with this aim in mind, but it just seems to have happened.)

don't know if this is doable for you - but i find wriggly and standing up changes much easier if there's no poo to deal with! :)
