sucking for comfort

Hi all

Im very new to mums net and this is my first post. I've tried to search around for this topic but haven't found anything that quite covers my need.

My newborn is fantastic at only 3 days old, he feeds really well and has already put on 3oz since birth, however he does seem to like to come back on the breast after feeding, winding and settllng for an extra suck only to then fall asleep.

This is starting to really hurt the nipples and I'm wondering if there is anything I can do to satisfy this need for comfort without resorting to a dummy as I'm worried he will become far too dependant on this in the future and offering a finger just doesn't seem to do the trick for him.

Im also just looking for reassurance that this can be perfectly normal and there is nothing that I am doing wrong either when feeding or winding...

Opinions and advice would be much appreciated Smile

My DS1 comort sucked- I just let him, but he would take in too much milk then sick it all up. I was determined he wasn't having a dummy at all! I phoned the breast feeding people who advised me it was ok.
With DS2 I wasn't able to do that as I had a 2 year old demanding my attention. If I didn't have the time to do the comfort suck thing,I would pop a dummy in but then remove it after he fell asleep. He gradually started falling asleep on his own & the dummy wasn't needed, but I do understand the reluctance to resort to one.

Congratulations on the birth of your baby!

re the sucking- perfectly normal healthy newborn behaviour. This is what babies are meant to do! Breastfeeding can be quite uncomfortable for a short while but it will settle down within a couple of weeks. Sounds like you're doing everything right to me!

to clarify - they advised me it was ok to allow DS1 to comfort suck
