Toddler wailing in her sleep

DD is 15 months old and has never been a great sleeper. When she was 1 we did CC to at least get her in bed at a normal-ish time (we aim for 7.30, also have a 4 yo and a small house, she won't settle if she knows he is still up).

She still wakes up 2 or 3 times in the night, but also wails in her sleep. I've checked on her and she is definitley alseep. It can go on for 2 hours and keeps everyone else awake! Nursery have raised this too, and says she is waking up the other babies at nap time. I thought it was teeth - and she was teething but not at the moment. She sounds so unhappy, bit seems OK when she wakes up.

Is it just dreams? My DS has cried in his sleep once and frequently laughs and talks. I'm not sure there's much you can do about dreams, though I would pick her up and soothe her, even if it woke her.

My DD is also 15mo and does this. She's asleep but crying/moaning in her sleep. The only way I can stop it is to pick her up and ssh/cuddle her a little and put her back down. It's horrible to think she's 'unhappy' in her sleep.

Supposedly I've read that it might be when they are falling into that deep sleep (90 mins or so after falling asleep) and apparently you partly wake up ad go straight back to a deep sleep (like if we changed position or pull covers up over a little more) but they don't quite get to the deep sleep so are half asleep/half awake.

Not sure if this is true but she does cry if she wakes up from a nap and wants to go back to sleep so might be something in it. It sounds like the same cry to me.
