need to change method of getting 10mo old son to sleep - help!

Since the age of 2 months we have rocked Owen to sleep. This was fine when he was small but now he weights 22+lbs and struggles and crys. He has always fought sleep getting really fussy then when we go to put him to sleep he would cry. We have the times when he is just worn out and will drop off in out arms, but these are few and far between. But i'm convinced there must be a way to get him to nap without all this arm/back aching rocking and screaming and writhing in my arms.

At night i breastfeed him to sleep and id really like to not feel like i have to wait till bed time to feed him, but i know it gets him to sleep easy so i do it. I'd like to feed him earlier if i want then get him to sleep later, this was allowing me to leave the house before his bedtime or just to let the hubby put him to bed.
I plan on continuing the breastfeeding for the foreseeable future but i hgotta kick this rocking habit to get him to sleep. He is crawing and very mobile so lying him down in bed when he is fussy just makes him scream and stand up. There is no way he would just lie there and fall asleep eventually. I can't see myself doing CIO. (though if nothing else works.....) He does sleep thorough and self soothes, its just the naps and bedtime.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Why don't you feed him earlier, cuddle then put down on his tummy and stroke his back or wiggle his bum until he sleeps?

Thank you Gailthegoldfish, that has answered it for me. Appreciate you letting me know.

Let me know how you get on owensmum, my DD is 6 mo and a little over 20lbs! My back is killing me and she is getting stronger all the time. I need to make the transition to getting her to sleep without rocking too.
