Unusual head movements??? Advice please......

Hi. My ds (6mths old) has recently started shaking his head from side to side (i.e. as if saying 'no' very fast) - has anyone ever experienced this behaviour?
None of the books say anything about this being a normal developmental movement for a baby, so I'm wondering whether or not he has an ear infection or a visual problem?

Advice would be great as I'm a wee bit concerned that I am not taking it seriously enough??

Thanks

My ds did this, and I posted here. My initial thought was that it just felt nice and so he did it some more. (Try it, it's kind of nice) Then I realised that my dad did a similar thing when he changed ds's nappy, whilst making a silly noise. Anyway, when my dad went home again it stopped.

Does he seem distressed. He might just be doing it because he can

Hi. Seems quite happy when he does it - although he is teething regularly now - perhaps its his way of dealing with the pain???? Who knows? Have arranged to see HV tomorrow to check his ears and eyes just in case - better safe than sorry

Ds2 (11 months) does this too. He shakes his head really quickly as though he's saying no. At first, like you, I thought it might have been an ear infection but it wasn't. In ds2's case I think he just likes the sensation it gives him.

If you are worried you should get it checked out. It may be nothing but it's always best to be sure.

My ds did this also at around 6 mths - especially when I was trying to feed him in his highchair. He seemed to enjoy it - would stop for a spoonful of food and then go again. Must admit I was a little alarmed but he's 15 mths now and seems OK

Both my ds and dd did this around the same age. Dd did it very violently and I was a little worried that it would mush her brains, but she seems to be ok. I think they just like the feel of it...part of experimenting with body parts. My dd at 15 mo still loves to stick her finger really far up her nose, or into her eye.
