Cutting a 6 year old's toenails. How do do without killing them and me?

Dd has refused to let me cut them any more, because I hurt, despite the fact I treat them as if they are delicate blown glass Hmm. Nor will she let me use clippers. She can't manage them herself.

She will file her finger nails in a fashion as I am not allowed near them either. But the toe nails........arrrgh! What to do? Too difficult to file. Help! It's driving me mad.

give her painkillers Grin

my 11 year old DS1 and nail cutting - aaaaaargh!

when he was a baby I literally had to sit on him/pin him down to do this, he'd scream for the entire time so much he'd sweat and I had to give him a bath...

I use a nail clipper on his feet (he does his own nails) and he's wincing, tensing up, whining, crying, wailing etc. I hate cutting his nails.
I can't even say he behaves like a baby, would be an insult to 9 months old DD, good as gold! Smile

best to do it after a bath, when the nails are softer and easier to cut, my vote is really good nail clippers - less likely to injure and much quicker.

good to hear it isn't just my ds1. the only way I can do them is if he lies on the floor with legs straight I then sit on him with my knees either side of his legs and then have both hands free for the job and he can not kick me! ds2 often assists in preventing him from pushing me off. it would look awful from the front window but is the only way. I have tried bribery, threats, letting him for it but I don't think he has any control over his reaction. I also hate people touching my feet but ds3 adores having his nails cut.

I do my 5yo when he's asleep. He'll now come to me and say that his nails need cutting, so could I do them that night,

Mydd is a very light sleeper unfortunately

loris and dewe hahahaha!

I think they are oversensitive, my DS1 behaves like I'm skinning him alive!

But when I manage to get hold of her foot, she keeps pulling it away at the last minute....so then I hurt her by accident....and then round we go again.

I think if I cut her toes off rather than her nails, it may solve the problem

My ds2 is particularly sensitive about this too, he now does them himself with clippers, he is 5, perhaps work on her clipping skills on something else first e.g. strip of paper, dry spaghetti?

missmapp · 13/01/2013 19:02

My dcs are both like this!! The only way I can do it is if DH holds him to prevent kicking, it is not v. enjoyable for anyone, but at least it gets the job done.

yes, chop 'em off...Grin
