Just started Speech Therapy. Prognosis...?

DS is 2.10 and just had his first speech therapy session which seemed to go well, but I forgot to ask about the long term prognosis. Will he eventually get over his problems (disordered language development?). I'm guessing so as I don't see adults with his issues! I don't want him to suffer socially, how long do you think it might take for him to respond to the therapy, or is it different in each case? Any insight would be gratefully received, thanks.

ds1 has a speech disorder. went to salt from 2yrs 6mnths til now when he is 6 yrs 6mnths although he has been discharged his speech is not 'normal' but understandable to the wider world. however all children are different and it is hard to generalise. however my bil had speech difficulties throughout his schooling and as an adult when he is on the phone or tired his speech is not always clear. he has been very successful in his career and has lots of friends etc so it had not made a huge impact. when I spoke to salt about ds1 she could not say about long term so we will just have to wait and see.

All of my sons have had a speech delay,ds2 described as having a significant delay,he saw a SALT at pre-school and until half way through his reception year.
He is now 6 and in year 1,he no longer needs the SALT and is absolutely flying through the reading levels in his class.Someone said to me the other day "doesn't he speak beautifully",so he has made huge progress and if you didn't know that he had a delay there is no way you would know.
Your ds is getting the help early and that will be a great help.Good luck, hope that helps abit.

Thanks ladies. Yes I'm pleased they have accepted him early - we have been in the system for a year already. But I think I'm concerned because his is labelled as disordered rather than delayed. I can see with a delay that eventually thing will come, but disordered speech implies jumbled brain!
I'll ask next time I see them...

ds1 has also got a speech disorder but it took ages for this to be recognised by salt so in a way it is good that it had been recognised early as you will get more input. ds2 has a delay and other than a few group sessions we did not get much input. hope all goes well.
