Large Tonsils/tonsillitis causing speech delays......

hi,
my poor dd (25 months) has just about recovered from a serious bout of tonsillitis, she was in hospital with it as she couldn't drink or anything and really suffered a lot bless her little heart!

anyway, drs have said that at some point in near future she will need to have her tonsils removed (3rd bout of tonsillitis in 6 months). now, as with all anxious mums, i have been reading up about it, and came across that enlarged tonsils can cause speech delays in toddlers, and as i have posted before i have some concerns about my daughter's speech....

so have any of you wonderful mums ever come across this before or had experience of it with your own little ones??

comments and advice welcomed as always Grin
xx

DS2 had his tonsils and adenoids out when he was 5yrs old, he could hardly eat chewy food up until then as the restricted airways caused him to mouth-breathe

his tone of voice changed overnight after the op, and he wasn't as breathless when talking

he was also a 'late' talker, but on reflection, i think this was down to other (undetected) issues

i have never noticed any link between speech delay and enlarged tonsils, but it makes sense i suppose, the child might be reluctant to use sounds if their throat hurts or is restricted for any amount of time

it just makes me wonder as when she does speak with what words she does know, her voice does sound quite deep and husky!

enlarged tonsils may well be affecting the sound of her words, i would check with the ENT consultant
