Learning to walk but still on tippy-toes

Firstly, hello to everyone, I've been a silent 'lurker' for a while and it seems like a great resource so 'hello'!

Secondly, my little girl 'Izzy' is not 16 months and has been properly walking on her own for about 6 weeks. - It's funny, before she started nursery (at around 12 months) she was cruising around the house all the time so we thought she'd start walking really soon as she'd want to be up-and-about with all the other children at nursery but I think she realised that she was such a pro-crawler that she seemed to give up on trying to walk and went back to speed crawling everywhere. In December she finally started to walk by herself around the lounge, bedrooms, etc but she walks absolutely EVERYWHERE on her tippy-toes, should I be concerned? - When she stands still she'll put her feet flat but as soon as she starts walking she's back up like a ballerina? - I'm amazed that she can even balance so well in this stance? She's our first and as we live out in the sticks a bit and I work for myself I don't get to see a lot of other mums to know whether it's normal or not?

  • any help or advice would be hugely appreciated!

Thanks

Completely normal, don't put her in shoes until she has stopped doing it though as that could set her back in terms of balance and confidence. I used to work in a children's shoe shop and we saw it all the time. Nothing to worry about (although people do, my friend who is a GP has had people in with this needing reassurance) so you are normal on that count too!

Take her to see the GP just in case. It can be totally normal or it can indicate a muscle problem or other issue. Sometimes their Achilles tendons are short and that can make them tiptoe...totally correctable with some physio.

Hi - sounds pretty normal especially for this early on, but I would recommend keeping an eye on this. The reason I say this is the DS (3.10) of friends of ours did this for so long that he now cannot put his heels down and is probably going to have to go into casts to sort it out.

I am not saying at all that this is going to be the outcome for your DD, but if it continues for say a number of months without any inclination to walk flat-footed I'd go to the GP.
