Ds could write his name when he was just 4

He has been able to read a basic book for about 6 months (he is 4y 9m, but is ahead in reading).

He has only just started using a knife and fork properly. He was way behind his peers.

There is no right and wrong time, and they all develop this skills at different times.

DD has just turned 4yo this month. She will start school in September.

  1. She wrote her name by herself a week or so before she turned 3yo.
  1. She cannot yet read. She can read, recogise and spell about a dozen simple CVC words and can sound out other CVC, phonetically spelt words and is learning to blend. But she cannot read.
  1. She can use a fork and spooon completely. She can use a knife if the thing she is cutting is soft and easy to do. She can't for example, cut meat up for herself yet. She uses child sized xutlery, as easier, and the knifes don't really have cutting edges.

My DD's just turned 3, she can write her name, but forgets how to spell it - i.e she can write the letters in the wrong order, I have to remind her which way to write it. Obviously can't read. She can use a knife and fork but its hard work and she can make a proper meal of it. TBH I only started to push her because my parents scowl every time she uses her fingers. I'd say if a child's been taught how to use them from a younger age then they should be more accomplished.

Thinking about it, ds has been able to write his name longer than 10 months, but I can't remember exactly when he started.

Anyway, as someone said, they all do things at different times. I used to worry because ds was always late in doing anything that required motor skills. He rolled at 7 months, crawled at 10 months, walked at 18 months ands talked at 2y 6m. He was toilet trained at 3y 2m.

dd - now 4 1/2 - could write her name at around 3 , ds was much older but has motor skill issues.
dd has been actually reading a book since she just turned 4 (began Reception last September)but could tell the story fairly accurately well before then page by page, having previously read it with someone. ds didn't start to learn to read until 5 1/2 but rapidly became fluent and could read odd words and sentences before then.
she can already use a knife and fork properly as can he.

DS could probably write his name at 3 and a half.
He couldn't read a book until he was 5 and a half - in NZ they don't start school till their 5th birthday and he picked it up really quickly once he was being taught.
Knife and fork properly? He still isn't great with a knife tbh ... I still tend to cut up food that needs cutting - he is 6 and a half Blush - but only because he gets so frustrated if it doesn't work that I can't bear the hassle!

Dottydot · 18/04/2006 21:30

Ds is just over 4 and can't do any of those things!

He can copy his name if you write it for him - although his name's very long so he usually chooses to write a shortened version, even though he doesn't like to be called that!

He can't read at all - doesn't know all his letters - probably about half I'd say.

He can use a fork but not a knife -usually uses a spoon and fingers...

Sparklemagic · 18/04/2006 21:32

my DS is three and a half and can't write his name, or anything at all! he has a nice grip though, holds a pen well but just scribbles manically!

not reading

Can't use knife and fork, has always rejected using them and is only just really coming round to using a fork - would rather pick things up with his fingers. He can physically do it, it's preference.
