Milk... What to do if 16mo refuses to drink it?

My DS is 16mo. He reduced to 2 bottles (morning and bedtime) a few months ago and then about a month ago stopped his bedtime bottle (tried beaker but he wouldn't touch it) now he is starting to refuse his morning milk! I just don't know what to do, there's only do much yoghurt and cheese I can give him in a day to try and make up for it!

how about blending a couple of strawberries and/or banana or peach with the milk ?

My DS has never got on with cows milk as a drink. He has milk in his cereal and plenty of cheese and yoghurt. I think when I looked at the calcium content it worked out ok. Some breakfast cereals (like ready brek) also contain calcium so you could look into that.

re previous message, that's assuming no allergies to fruit.

The recommendation is for 300 ml a day between 12 and 24 months and includes any milk in food. So its not actually that much. Agree that the milkshakes are a good idea, you could even get him involved by chopping or breaking up the banana. My dd has never been big on cows milk to drink but loves these.

My dd would also like a little, more often so try a snack with a little milk in the morning and afternoon?

How is he with other calcium rich foods such as salmon and sardines?

hayesgirl · 06/01/2013 19:50

His diet is generally pretty good. He does eat salmon, loves cheese and yoghurt. Tried a banana milkshake this afternoon and he wasn't impressed! I'll try again though see if he comes round to it.

Didn't realise it was only 300ml a day he needs, thought it was a lot more than that!

Thanks for the advice

and protein
might be worth having a look through that website - it's really helpful.

Don't forget things like custard too (with bananas) and you can add cheese and milk or cream to mashed potatoes.

(Do babies that age eat that kind of thing? I can't remember it's been so long!!)

DD will drink things from an open cup or with a straw when she refuses a zippy cup, have you tried either of those?

Engelsemama · 06/01/2013 20:26

My 15mo won't drink milk, but he has 200ml in porridge and will have yoghurt/cheese during the course of the day as well.

mrscog · 06/01/2013 21:09

What about hot chocolate? - cooled down a lot obviously but that could be a good way to get some extra milk in.

VinegarDrinker · 06/01/2013 21:14

My DS didn't drink milk at all between 14 months (when we stopped his bottles) and about 20 months, when randomly he started asking for it on occasion, often with a snack mid afternoon. He eats plenty of cheese and yoghurt as well as milk with his porridge every morning, so I'm not at all worried.

KoalaTale · 07/01/2013 21:26

Hi all, my dd doesn't like drinking cows milk either, though likes yoghurt and cheese.

I saw mention of sardines - I've bought a can of skinless and boneless ones in olive oil for dd 12mo, does anyone have any ideas on how she'd like to eat them?on toest?
