Just mentioned it to DD who will be 5 in August. I said maybe we could take one stabilisers off in the summer, she nealry cried!!! lol

To be fair, she doesn't go on her bike that much, although she would love to, so she doesn't get much practise

ds was 5 - it took a far bit of practice - esp to start himself off. He is now 6 and his steering sometimes leaves alot to be desired - end up having to apologise alot to the near misses Blush

I taught ds on grass at first - it was good cos it was short, firm and flat. He wasnt frightened about falling off - which he did, alot. After i was sure he could balance I said he needed to practice as if he was unable to to ride on two wheels there was no way i would look at getting him a super new bike.. Grin bribery works sometimes

Once he got more confident moved to tarmac - from which he learnt to push himself off.

My DS only learned to ride a book with stabilisers on recently and am not going to rush to take them off. He will be 6 in June.

I worked with an occupational therapist who suggested that a child could not balance on a 2 wheeler bike needed a two wheeler scooter to get that core balance before they move on to the bike.
It works!! Last summer got my 3 yr old a two wheeler scooter and this year she's riding a two wheeler without stabilisers! Try it and see!

I think the scooter thing has some truth. My DS3
has been a wizz on his two wheel scooter, likes to follow his brother DS5.

A couple of weeks ago took the stablizers off DS5, no problem at all after months on his scooter, DS3 then wanted his stabilisrs off and hey presto off he went not a wobble !!

DS3 looks a bit younger than he is and gets some strange looks when he whizzes past on his two wheels now !! Only problem he has trouble stopping Smile

DS1 was around about five. He had a new bigger bike with stabilizers and his old smaller bike without stabilizers. He just decided to pick up the old bike one day and mastered it by himself.

My DD was just over 4 years old. We had bought her a little mountain bike as she was tall for her age and the little girls bikes would have been outgrown too quick. She trundled about in the back garden with stablisers for a few weeks then the first time I took the stablisers off I took her to the school playground she was off like a shot and that was it, there was no stopping her. I don't think she EVER fell off which was a blooming miracle. I guess I was just very lucky.

ds just on a stabilerless bike at nursery at 4 and a half, and pedalled off. We had a bit of a shock when we picked him up and nursery asked us if we knew he could ride a bike! Didn't half make me feel a bad mummy for not having taken them off at home first!
