Using scissors - what age?

DS1 can't use them the normal way yet - he can only use his whole hand to squeeze them together if I hold them, or he can use two hands together if I hold the paper. He's just 3. Is that within the normal range?

yes I would say that is normal. They do scissor work at nursery/school so plenty of time to learn

my dd was 3 last oct and she is really quite good with them now. previous to last month she didnt reall use them correctly. two handed attempts and then got frustrated and threw them so i withdrew them for a little while. over xmas she has been doing cutting activities several times a day and now it just clicked. she uses her left hand but draws with her right!!?
this morning she has cut around pictures from a peppa mag. she used to just cut strips over and over and then she strated cutting paper into tiny pieces/ kept her happy for a gd 20 mins. this then progressed to wanting to cut actual shapes and looking at what exacly she is cutting and cutting around it. Its very messy and the hoover has clogged up daily am so proud of her though!

Yes. My DS refused point blank to use scissors or hold a crayon or pencil till he started school. There are lots of other ways to help them improve their fine motor skills, I just had to think of things that were more boyish Grin
