Is this normal 2 year old behaviour (for a boy)?

  • barely any concentration - flits from one toy to another without really engaging with it for any length of time. Loves kicking balloons, drawing and being completely involved in whatever me or DH are doing
  • suddenly asking all the time for his teddy when he only has ever had him at night
  • CANNOT easily share his toys with anyone. He's very soft and gentle but snatches them back, says 'no, it's (insert name). Eventually might thaw but not all the time
  • language is fine but mostly short two, maybe three word sentences but refers to himself in third person
  • some words are totally unclear
  • goes from 1 - 10/crying in a nano second if he doesn't get his own way

Thanks. Just a bit anxious that this might not be normal behaviour

Sounds normal to me (for a boy or girl)

Yes this is perfectly normal for a 2 year old.

Lots of love and attention and eye contact will help, but there isn't a 2 year old in the world to whom sharing comes naturally - it is learned very gradually through lots of positive reinforcement and praise.

and there are plenty of 3 4 and 5 year olds to whom your last 2 points also apply.

Oh God yes you have just described DS now 4 to a tee, apart from the referring in the third person.

Thanks all

Is the referring to himself in third person a stage in language development?

Yes, DD did it but DS didn't.

Sadly this is normal Grin

My DS (21m) also refers to himself as "baba" - I'm assuming that this is because they don't recognise themselves (in pictures/mirrors etc...) until they are about 3? DS can point to "baba" in the mirror but I don't think he realises its him.

Thanks all, that's helpful

You are describing my 2 year old DS. I also feel reassured now. DS is extremely clingy (always has been) but even more so now. We have an open plan house and I can't walk into 'another room' without him screaming and crying! DS also refers to himself in the 3rd person which I find very cute!

Hope it's normal since you've just described by DS (with the exception of the drawing!)

You've pretty much described my ds. He is 30 months.
