DD2 is 11mo.
She rolled over once at 6 months and never again. When put on her tummy she will try to move but can't bring her legs up and usually just gives up. She can't bear any weight on her legs.
She can sit well and started bottom shuffling about 3 weeks ago. She will sit quite happily with her legs far apart and bend herself in half. She can even rest her head on the floor in this position.
Is this anything to worry about?

My dd is 10 months next week and the same. She sits but prone to falling over. Won't pull herself up. Doesn't crawl. Doesn't roll and if she's put on her tummy she lifts her legs, arms and head off the floor like she's sky diving and balances on her tummy and screams. I keep being told not to worry but when I see other 10 months old starting to cruise etc its hard not too Blush

DD, now nearly 6, didn't go anywhere until she was 12 months. Not interested in rolling or crawling at all. She could stand up whilst holding onto something but couldn't/didn't pull herself up. She bottom shuffled a bit at 12 months then got the idea, crawled for a short while and was walking at 15 months. All totally within normal behaviour, if rather late.

It is tricky when you see everyone else's children walking or crawling though. DD did benefit from a bit of an incentive - her nursery usually wouldn't allow them to progress from the baby room until they were a year and could walk but agreed to move DD despite her not walking when I asked. All the other children in that room could walk and get to everything quicker than her, so she soon realised there was a bonus to getting up and going! If your DD is in childcare then maybe something similar might encourage her too, a bit later on, but I wouldn't worry yet.

Your HV might be able to reassure you as well.

I would be more concerned if you hadn't said that she can sit up and bum shuffle. Are you sure she can't rest weight on her legs? Could be that she just doesn't want to - I've seen a few kids like that.

I'd advise taking her for a checkup with the GP if you're concerned. I personally have no faith whatsoever in HVs due to the number of times I've heard them talking complete rubbish, but if you have a HV that you trust then you could discuss it with him/her too.

I appreciate that it's easier said than done but do try not to worry, they all develop at different rates!

My DD didn't walk until she was 14 months but she pulled to stand on my lap and cruised at one yr. If she can weight bear on your knee and you can feel the strength in her legs she can weight bear.
I would worry if my DD couldn't weight bear rather than refuses to weight bear. There is a difference and the medical profession are only concerned about babies that can't weight bear at 1yr, so it might be best to check it out.

It's a worry when It's your own child, but sounds quite normal to me. They develop at their own rate.
Ds2 went from absolutely hating tummy time, to rolling over by himself. When he could roll himself he didn't mind being on his tummy. Then, from not sitting unaided, to sitting unaided, crawling, pulling up to stand and trying to climb within 2 weeks. It was a massive development leap.

Things could change very quickly OP. I wouldn't worry just yet, she's still very young.

My DS didn't weight bear at all until 12 months. Now at 15 months he is cruising but not walking - I think he will though, he just hates to be helped in any way! HV was worried enough to want to see him further over the no weight bearing thing, so worth bringing it up with them if you're concerned.

TickledOnion · 28/12/2012 17:24

Thanks everyone. HV wasn't worried but I'm not sure she knew what she was talking about. I will have a look at whether she is refusing or unable to bear weight.

Also with my ds, if I try to hold him up with me just holding his hands, his legs go like jelly. But if he pulls himself up, he is steady on his feet. He is 11 months too.

My dd sat up at by herself at 5 months and then didn't do anything else for ages. Although she spoke early too so just sort of sat and chatted for nearly a year!

She hated being on her tummy and would just scream. I can't remember when she eventually crawled but she didn't walk until she was 19 months. She didn't bare weight on her legs until about 14 months I think. All normal now.

I think as others have said the fact that she is sitting and bum shuffling is all good and I wouldn't worry about the rest until much older.

Mention to GP though if you continue to worry.
