How long does it take your ebf newborn to burp?

Dd2 is 6wo and it feels like I spend SO much time helping her to burp, sometimes over an hour after her feed.
If I lay her down before she has burped sufficiently, she pukes. This would be ok if I didn't have a 2yo dd1 to entertain too so I was wondering if this level of windiness is anything like normal...?

Ds was like this. Fed fast and then took hours to settle. Really frustrating at night when I wanted to be heading back to bed. The times I cut it short I'd be up again within 30 mins, with him wailing from gas or sicking up. The extra 30 mins sleep cost another hour of being awake. Hmm

Good news he's now mostly over it at 16 weeks instead he wakes because he needs help to fart Sad

My DS was hard to burp , especially when he was very little - now, at thirteen weeks, he is usually able to burb after a feed within a minute of being held up on my shoulder. So it gets easier! I usually tried for ten minutes max. to get a burb from him and if he didn't manage one, then just move on to something else. He was/is the same as your little one in that he needs to be held upright for at least half an hour after a feed or else he spits up - totally hear you 'braingoneawol', this makes nighttime resettling after a feed a lengthy and utterly exhausting process. What I would recommend is using a sling;helps to keep little one vertical after his feed and means you have your hands - relatively - free to look after your older little one.

HTH, good luck :)

Have you tried sitting her up and leaning her forward a bit, supporting her head with your hand, under chin, and rubbing her back? Got the tricky ones out for mine :)

If she doesn't burp for an hour after a feed then it doesn't sound like she really needs to burp. Maybe she just needs to be upright though, due to a bit of reflux?

Does ebf mean expressed bf or exclusively ? Because breast fed babies shouldn't need winding - as there is no air getting in if there is a good latch etc . Bottle fed babies do need winding as they are more likely to take in air .

If she's taking an hour then there's probably no wind!

Hi, my exclusively breast fed baby never burped, just farted !

My ebf DS rarely buried. Threw up a bit but not much wind. It just may not be there.

Santa, mine is exclusively bf and almost always needed burping. I have a very fast let down which caused him to gulp and pull off when he got too much and choked.

I've never managed to resolve it except that now he stays mostly asleep at night so doesn't suck so hard and can burp with very little help when he does need it in the day.

BrainGoneAwol · 23/12/2012 17:03

I should add that the reason I think ds needed burping is because if I didn't, he was wailing with gas within 30 mins. If he burped this didn't happen.
