How much vocabulary should a 16 month old have?

Ds has been very slow on the uptake with speaking, he says "Mummy" and "Daddy" very clearly, but not much else. I really have no idea of how much he shouold be saying. My friends children of the same age all say a good few words, and one can even say a couple of simple phrases. DS has always been very active physically, he crawled before 6 months, and was walking at 9, do you think maybe he's just a walker and not a talker?????

intergalactic walrus - this is one of those threads where experience will vary greatly
some mums will come on as say how their 16 month old was talking in full and colourful sentences and others will have chidren the same age who babble away incoherantly. And then everyone in the middle!
I have a 15 month old and she falls in the middle range. I understand a lot of what she says but not a lot of others do.

Twiglett I would count "power rangers" as one word in speech acuqisition terms so you will have to knock her down to nine. Wink

DD is 23 months and can say loads of words but does not seem interested in stringing them together. I think DS at this age had fewer words but was starting to string them. Oh and among DS's contribution to DD's vocab is a very clear "fight" Grin and "like" meaning "I don't like this" Angry

just looked in my kids's red books and dd had around 40 words at 16 months whilst ds had around 15.

Girls normally better talkers than boys and dd also my second.

Hi there my ds is 21 months he only says bye bye, no, mummy, daddy, thankyou and car. He walked quickly and crawled quickly but his speech is taking its time dont panic it will come he is still a baby.

schneebly · 14/04/2006 11:28

16 months is still young - my ds is 15 months and can only say 'bye' 'uh-oh' 'mama' and 'dada'. I dont think that is slow at all. DS1 didnt say much that made any sense until he was over 2 and he is a smart cookie. No need for worry at all!

Ds was talking well at 16 months and doing jigsaws, however at 9 months he wasn't even crawling - didn't do that until 12 months.

Just keep on talking, reading and singing and all those words will come out soon. You'll have a 3 year old who jabbers away constantly.

I would not be to concerned as dd (2.3mths) has only just starting to to say words that we can understand, but has been walking since 10 months. I have been told by various people that children develope in either speach or walking. Hence have cheecky monkey who is always exploring somewhere she shouldn't be.

Some can talk nearly fluently (not very many but some can) while others say few or even 0 words...

both extreames are normal! (tho second option more likely than the first IMO!)
